[folk singer not sea chanty singer] Last night I saw Dar Williams play. It was a rather small venue (170 people I guess is the capacity), so it's pretty cozy. It was a good concert, though she seemed a little sick, coughing and the like. She mentioned having just adopted a new child who was "a river of snot" and then added "and beauty" as an afterthought. I was standing in what would have been the equivalent of the 6th row, had the seats gone that far back, and figured I was close enough that I could do a quick sketch. I had a bit of paper and a pen and drew this while standing. I was tempted to ask if I could use the back of whoever was standing next to me, but that seemed a bit much. So given the lighting, I was standing, using my hand to support the paper, which was pretty small, it's not all that bad.

I should mention I rarely put proper names in the text, but she's well-known enough and this was a public concert that it shouldn't compromise her privacy. And besides, I need to mention her name, because I can never get past the notion that her name always reminds me of things a pirate would say. I always expect that she'd sing pirate chanties with a lot of "arrrrr"s thrown in. Of course that's about as far from the truth as it can get, but nonetheless, it's hard to get that notion out of my head. I had thought of adding to the picture to make her more pirate-like, but given the awkward setup I had, I figured it would only ruin a picture that actually bears a passing resemblance to her. images/Drawings/Sketches/dar.png
