The City Botanic Gardens

The day after the DFRWS conference, I ran a few errands (postcards, gifts, snacks), tried to avoid the angry midday sun (max UV index of 11, which is EXTREME! though it can get higher than that). In the mid to late afternoon, I went to the City Botanic Gardens, which consists of a large park with fountains, walking paths, gardens that include collections of unusual species, and more. It's in the Central Business Distict (i.e., central downtown) and is bordered by the Brisbane River, and the Queensland University of Technology.

I spent some time wandering around the park when I had enough "downtown time".

It was a bright sunny day out, so I played with some different exposure levels to see what looked best, especially with the water glittering in the fountains.

I don't know what this is but it looks cool. 016-DSC_9576: A golden shrimp plant (according to online sources). 017-DSC_9577: 018-botanic_gardens_Panorama3: A bench with banyans behind (beware!). 019-DSC_9584: It's a banyan fig, a type of ficus. They are creepy. 020-DSC_9586: By now the construction should be complete and the bridge open for a month. 021-DSC_9587: The (as of October 2024) soon to be operational Kangaroo Point Bridge. 022-DSC_9588: All good parks need a cannon for defensive purposes. An odd sculpture based on the curls in an 18th century wig (periwig), that suggests motion and the thought that goes on underneath the wig. And more. 033-DSC_9600: Elephant Apples. Elephants can eat and "disperse" them, i.e., poop. 035-DSC_9602: Sources suggest this might be some sort of Canna lily. 036-DSC_9603: Sources suggest this might be some sort of Coleus plant. Bottom:
