After snow, cold weather, and then warm weather and rain, the air was saturaged with moisture and had had enough off it, and we had a very foggy day (and night) on Thursday, January 25, 2024. It was impressively foggy. Impressive enough that I felt compelled to venture out on a little walk and see if I could capture just how foggy it was. I just walked around the neighborhood a little, including a nearby trail. I didn't feel like driving anywhere. I tried a few tests using the with and without the flash to see how it enhances the foggy effect.

Flashback Alert!: In full disclosure, this is not that different in spirit from when I spent a few hours in the morning 21 years ago (!?!) on December 12, 2002 to take some other foggy day photos, just some different locations and a film camera. I think that Dead End and the Ominous Shadowy Figure in the Distance pictures came out better back then. I was using the camera remote control, and didn't feel like playing with the timer like I did 21 years ago, which limited the distance. But all I could do then was scan in the printed photos, no fancy adjusting stuff, and I had no idea how the pictures came out until after I got the film developed and the prints made, so there's a bit more legitimacy to it.

Often the default Lightroom adjustments will reduce the impact of the fog, which is good if you want to see the image, bad if you want to see the fog. But I think some of these new ones are atmospheric and spooky. 001-DSC_7983: The parking lot. 002-DSC_7981: The road near my place. 003-DSC_7984: Headlights from a car. The street light was less than 300 feet away. 004-DSC_7989: See the taillights from the car? Stop, look, and listen before crossing the road! 005-DSC_7986: A barn becomes spooookier in the fog! 006-DSC_7987: So does a freaky tree with multiple screaming eye-hole mouths! 007-DSC_7992: I like the concept, but my picture from 21 years ago is better. 008-DSC_7993: Looking back from the dead end sign, I wanted to show how obscurred the bus was. I didn't catch its flashing white light on top. 009-DSC_7994: The path awaits you...to the spooky, foggy forest...OF DOOOOM!!! 010-DSC_7995: I wanted to capture the contrast of the fading of the near vs. far branches. 011-DSC_7996: More branches in fog. 012-DSC_7997: Changing photos to B&W made no difference, so they're all color. 013-DSC_7998: What awaits the unwary traveler down the foggy trail? 014-DSC_7999: The Laughing Evil Tree (of DOOOOM) laughs at thee! (taken w/flash) 015-DSC_8000: The Laughing Evil Tree (of DOOOOM) still laughing at thee! (taken w/out flash) 016-DSC_8001: Just like the fog, the branches close in upon foolish travelers. (taken w/flash) 017-DSC_8002: The Gate marks the point where the traveler must chose the form of their doom. 018-DSC_8006: An ominous figure tries...to get the camera remote to work in the fog (of DOOM). 019-DSC_8007: Lo, what monster approacheth from beyond the World's End? 020-foggy-tree_Panorama: Oh, it's nothing but the Giant Evil Foggy Tree (of DOOOM).
