Subtitle: I spent a few days on Martha's Vineyard, from Wednesday June 14 to Saturday June 17, 2017, visiting my sister while she was out there. We hiked around a few places, plus I explored Vineyard Haven, and some areas near the Lagoon Pond. And then Monday morning it was super-foggy, which was kind of cool.

172 photos included. 001-DSC_0224-header: Flying to Martha's Vineyard 001-DSC_0224-headertext: I flew the flying club's Mooney (7CF) from Ithaca to Martha's Vineyard. Nice clear day to fly. 001-DSC_0224: The Hudson River, from the west side heading east, looking north. 002-DSC_0225: The Hudson River, from the west side, heading east, looking south. 003-DSC_0226: 004-DSC_0227: The Catskill Mountains, looking northwest. 005-DSC_0228: More Catskill Mountains. 006-DSC_0229: The Martha's Vineyard Airport FBO. 007-DSC_0230: The GA ramp at Martha's Vineyard. The Mooney is by "the blue ropes" (where non-local planes park) in the distance. It's visible in the full-size image as the front plane of the three that appear just over the nose of the white and blue plane (a Piper Saratoga). 008-tree-panorama-header: Fulling Mill Brook Preserve 008-tree-panorama-headertext: Fulling Mill Brook Preserve is a hiking trail in a wooded area (with a brook that goes through it) is part of the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank, located in Chilmark, near Beetlebung Corner. Also, there's some hills on the trail, something I don't really associate much with the Island. 008-tree-panorama: A two picture vertical panoramic shot of some of the trees in the area. It was generally pretty shaded and cool on the trail. 008a-DSC_0231: A map of the trail. I took this picture mostly so we wouldn't get lost. It was useful. 009-DSC_0232: There are a lot of footbridges and elevated walkways on the trail. 010-DSC_0234: And of course plenty of water. 011-DSC_0235: 012-DSC_0236: Marlene and Honey. 013-DSC_0237: Marlene heading up the trail. 014-DSC_0239: A rock, with light and shadows on it. 015-DSC_0240: I like silhouette shots, like this tree trunk. 016-DSC_0241: It was a clear, blue-sky day, which was occasionally visible through clearings. 017-DSC_0242: The trail continues into the woods. Ooooh, mysterious! 018-DSC_0243: A vine-covered trunk. 019-DSC_0244: A pretty flower along the trail. 020-DSC_0245: The remains of a stone wall. 021-DSC_0246: A sepia-toned black and white picture of the stone wall. It adds to the sense of age of the wall. 022-DSC_0247: A color shot of the wall. 023-DSC_0251: 024-DSC_0252: Steps going down on a walkway. 025-DSC_0253: Frank on the walkway. 026-DSC_0263: Marlene and Honey on the walkway. 027-DSC_0264: We were going on the Overlook Trail, though we didn't really find anything it was overlooking. It's possible the trees were blocking the views since everything was really growing and in bloom. 028-DSC_0265: The trail continues to Middle Road. 029-DSC_0266: The trail ended at a T-intersecton. I turned back at that p oint. 030-DSC_0267: The trail continues to South Road. 031-DSC_0268: More flowers. 032-DSC_0269: Water. 033-DSC_0270: A timer self-portrait of Frank on the walkway. 034-DSC_0271: Looking at the stairs going back up. 034a-trees_Panorama: A panoramic shot of some trees on the overlook trail. 036-DSC_0272-header: The View from the Porch 036-DSC_0272-headertext: The porch has a view of Beach Road, the drawbridge, and the Lagoon Pond, as well as a stream. It's quite nice. 036-DSC_0272: Playing with depth of field and a telephoto lens. 036a-DSC_0273: The "new" drawbridge. 037-DSC_0274: 038-DSC_0275: A small pond by the back yard with Beach Road beyond it. 039-DSC_0276: The Lobster Hatchery. 040-DSC_0277: 041-DSC_0278: The back porch of the cottage. 042-DSC_0279: Another view of the pond and Beach Road. 043-DSC_0280: The porch and pond and Beach Road. 044-DSC_0281: 045-DSC_0282: Sunset from the porch. 046-DSC_0283: Another view of the sunset. 047-DSC_0284: Sunset with a different exposure setting. 048-DSC_0292: A rose bush near the hospital. 049-DSC_0293: The MV hospital. 049a-porch_Panorama: A 180° panoramic view from the back porch of the stream and the Lagoon Pond beyond it. 050-DSC_0294-header: Farm Pond Preserve 050-DSC_0294-headertext: Farm Pond Preserve, near Oak Bluffs, is part of the MV Landbank. There's a path that goes around the pond, mostly a wooden walkway above the wetland area, which then heads into the woods. It goes to the Trade Winds Field Preserve (grass strip airport and another MV Landbank site). 050-DSC_0294: The Farm Pond, with the wind blowing at us. 051-DSC_0295: More wind on the Farm Pond. 052-DSC_0296: 053-DSC_0297: The walkway going into the woods. 054-DSC_0298: The walkway by the water. 055-DSC_0299: The woods are lovely, dark and deep... 056-DSC_0300: Watch out for that broken plank on the walkway... 057-DSC_0301: 058-DSC_0302: The end of the walkway. 059-DSC_0303: The edge of the Farm pond. 060-DSC_0304: Poison ivy is everywhere. 061-DSC_0306: A pine cone on the trail. 062-DSC_0307: We stopped here and didn't continue on to the next Preserve site. 063-DSC_0308: 064-DSC_0309: Some pretty flowers. 065-DSC_0310: Marlene and Honey. 066-DSC_0311: Geese in Farm Pond. 067-DSC_0312: A house by Farm Pond. 068-DSC_0314: The edge of the walkway. 069-DSC_0315: The edge of the walkway, with the wind blowing off the water directly at the camera. 070-DSC_0318: A coast guard airplane heads to the Vineyard airport (the white and orange colors are visible in the high resolution image). 071-DSC_0319: A bit of frothy sea foam. 072-eastchop_Panorama-header: East Chop Lighthouse 072-eastchop_Panorama-headertext: The East Chop Lighthouse is one of the two lighthouses on the north side of the island (as one might guess, the West Chop Lighthouse is the other one). We stopped there on the way back, so I stopped and took some pictures. 072-eastchop_Panorama: This is a vertical panoramic shot of the East Chop Lighthouse. 072a-DSC_0320: I like this one, containing the lighthouse and the marker sign. The lighthouse is located on Telegraph Hill. 073-DSC_0322: The East Chop Lighthouse. 074-DSC_0323: Some benches by the East Chop Lighthouse overlooking the Nantucket Sound. 075-DSC_0328: Another view of the Nantucket Sound from Telegraph Hill. 076-DSC_0329: Telegraph Hill has cliffs on the water side—this sign marks as far as people are allowed to go. 077-DSC_0330: A view of the Nantucket Sound through the bushes at the edge of Telegraph Hill. 078-DSC_0331: A view of East Chop Lighthouse from the north. 079-DSC_0332: Looking east from East Chop Lighthouse. 080-DSC_0336-header: The Lagoon and Beach 080-DSC_0336-headertext: I crossed the stream in back of our place, and took some pictures of the beach and Lagoon Pond. 080-DSC_0336: A view of the house. 081-DSC_0337: The Doug's Cove Preserve trail (it's fairly new). 082-DSC_0338: The new (to me) drawbridge across the Lagoon Pond. 083-DSC_0339: More of the Doug's Cove Preserve trail. The plants along the edge at the bottom (and everywhere else) are poison ivy. 084-DSC_0349: A long wooden walkway is visible in front of the utility pole but behind the goose. 085-DSC_0350: A pylon for a dock that's long been gone in the stream. 086-DSC_0351: 087-DSC_0352: 088-DSC_0353: A goose was sitting in the grass just beyond the stream. 089-DSC_0354: A view of the stream as it terminates in a pond. 090-DSC_0355: A sandbar that's visible only during low tide. 091-DSC_0358: Another view of the sandbar. 092-DSC_0360: A bird was at the edge of the water. 093-DSC_0361: The porch, stream, and pylon. 094-DSC_0362: Seaweed, weeeeee! 095-DSC_0363: 096-DSC_0364: 098-beach-panorama: A full 360° panoramic shot of the beach and Lagoon Pond. From left to right, start with the lobster hatchery at the edge (with the small, cylindrical water tower), then the drawbridge in the middle, some houses including ours, the hospital, the beach, and eventually back to the lobster hatchery. 102-DSC_0371-header: A Ferry Launching 102-DSC_0371-headertext: The ferry Island Home was finishing loading and about to depart. I took a few pictures of it. And then the doors closed and it immediately departed. The last picture was taken of the harbor just to the left of the ferry docks from the obervation area on the second floor of the Steamship Authority building. 102-DSC_0371: 103-DSC_0372: 104-DSC_0374: 105-DSC_0375: 106-DSC_0376: 107-DSC_0377: 108-DSC_0379: >THOOOM!!!!< 109-DSC_0380: 110-DSC_0381: 111-DSC_0383: 112-DSC_0384: 113-DSC_0385: 113a-harbor_Panorama1: To the left is Owen Beach. The ferry docks are on the right. 114-DSC_0389-header: Vineyard Haven 114-DSC_0389-headertext: My sister was meeting a friend for coffee, so I spent an hour or so wandering around Vineyard Haven. I went into some of the art galleries, got ice cream, and then walked to the ferry, Owen Park, the Vineyard Haven Library, and more. 114-DSC_0389: A map of the Vineyard Haven area. 114a-DSC_0365: Entering downtown Vineyard Haven. 114b-DSC_0366: Main street. 114c-DSC_0367: Looking down to the ferry. 114d-DSC_0369: 114e-DSC_0370: An old-looking stone building near the ferry. I liked the "old time" look of it in sepia-tone black and white. 115-DSC_0390: Looking at the ferry docks from Owen Park. 116-DSC_0391: I liked the blue color of the little sand shovel against the washed out grey colors of the wood and sand. 117-DSC_0392: Vineyard Haven harbor. 118-DSC_0393: Looking back at Owen Park from the dock. 119-DSC_0394: The pavillion at Owen Park. 120-DSC_0395: A bird's nest work of art at the Vineyard Haven library. 121-DSC_0397: Looking down into the bird's nest art piece at the Vineyard Haven library. 122-DSC_0398: A nice New England looking house in Vineyard Haven, complete iwth a Widow's walk on top. 123-DSC_0400: The clock next to the old location of the A Bunch of Grapes bookstore (which was Bed and Board before that). 124-DSC_0401: Another shot of the clock. "Time to read" 137-DSC_0421-header: The Lagoon Pond Drawbridge 137-DSC_0421-headertext: While I was taking pictures of a foggy morning, I heard the siren indicating that the drawbridge was going to open. I took a series of pictures of traffic stopping (this is the only traffic light on the entire island), the gates coming down, then the bridge opening. And then eventually the process reverses. I didn't actually get any pictures of the boat passing through the bridge, though I got one picture of a small motorboat cruising across the Lagoon. I liked mysterious feel to the fog. 137-DSC_0421: 137-DSC_0421: 138-DSC_0422: 139-DSC_0423: 140-DSC_0424: 141-DSC_0426: 142-DSC_0427: 143-DSC_0428: 144-DSC_0430: 145-DSC_0431: 146-DSC_0432: 147-DSC_0433: 148-DSC_0434: 149-DSC_0436: 150-DSC_0437: 151-DSC_0438: 152-DSC_0440: 153-DSC_0441: 154-DSC_0444: 155-DSC_0445: 156-DSC_0446: 157-DSC_0453: 158-DSC_0456: 159-DSC_0402-header: A Foggy Morning 159-DSC_0402-headertext: I woke up on Saturday morning and we were pretty solidly fogged in. It's always foggy in the morning when I play to fly from Martha's Vineyard, so I'm kind of used to it by now. It started to improve around 11am, and was fine by 1 or 2pm (although still cloudly enough to require instrument flying).

I decided to take some pictures since the fog was pretty thick and gave the boats and other objects in the Lagoon have a very stark, isolated look. 159-DSC_0402: 159a-DSC_0403: One lone boat in the fog. 159b-DSC_0404: A boat...to nowhere!!! 159c-DSC_0405: 159d-DSC_0406: A marker in the water indicating you are lost in the fog. 159e-DSC_0408: The drawbridge...or maybe just the memory of one. 159f-DSC_0409: A very plain view of the pond and houses beyond Beach Road. 159g-DSC_0410: The beach was visible, but not much beyond it. 159h-DSC_0411: 159i-DSC_0412: Even the birds are staying put. Or perhaps they are vultures, biding their time before boarding the boat. 159j-DSC_0413: The catttail reeds in the foreground are pretty clear, but the beach in the background is pretty washed out. 159k-DSC_0420: The drawbridge is mostly just suggested in the background. 160-DSC_0459: 160a-DSC_0460: Low tide and fog. 161-DSC_0461: A bit more washed out picture of the fog. The green grass at the bottom is the only indication that it's a color picture. 162-DSC_0462: A red marker with boats moored beyond it. 163-DSC_0464: 164-DSC_0465: 165-DSC_0467: A sepia-tone black and white picture of the fog. Really hard to tell that it's black and white, since most of the fog pictures have little color in them. 166-DSC_0469:
