Subtitle: Exploring Two New Places

The replacement drawbridge by the Lagoon Pond was completed in 2015, and the temporary bridge that was put in place during the construction was removed in 2016. Drawbridge Park was put in where the temporary bridge had been for 7 years. I've been to Martha's Vineyard quite a few times but this was the first time I visited the park. It's a small area to way by and under the bridge and is nice. Since it was the off season, the bridge didn't go up very often. We walked from the cottage to the bridge, the park, and then stopped by the Eastville Point Park just northeast of the bridge on the ocean side on the way back.

Short Cove Preserve is another MVY Land Bank property located on the central southern part of the Island on the north side of the Tisbury Great Pond. The Land Bank preserves areas on the Island, some for hiking, some for farming, some for hunting, and some just for the wildlife. Walking on the Short Cove trail is a mix of woods, water, and farm.

We where at Drawbridge Park on October 15, 2023, and Short Cove on October 16, 2023.

The leftmost isn't quite the flying spaghetti monster, a bit weirder. The second is a giant squid with um...grying ducklings with a ball gag or a Bane mouth guard?! And the third is just the iconic image of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Perhaps the first two are similar "lagoon" themed movies, but I don't think I want to know. I never saw Blue Lagoon but I don't think the first two qualify. 016-DSC_7533: History of the Lagoon Pond Bridge. 017-DSC_7540: The Island Home ferry approaches Vineyard Haven. 018-DSC_7541: Looking at the entrance to the drawbridge control house. 019-DSC_7542: The drawbridge control room. 020-DSC_7544: Sign on the bridge at the entrance to the Lagoon Pond. 021-DSC_7546: The drawbridge gate. Note the 45° angle on the mechanism with respect to the directoin of the bridge, and the 45° angle of the gate with respect to the mechanism. That akes it parallel to the bridge when open (now), and perpendicular (blocking the road) when closed. 022-DSC_7547: A nice mid-October day on Martha's Vineyard. 023-DSC_7550: Frank smiles and squints into the light on Eastvill Point Beach. 023a-Drawbridge_Information_Panorama: A panoramic photo of the sign taht describes the Lagoon Pond and the drawbridge at its entrance. 025-DSC_7595-header: Short Cove 025-DSC_7595-headertext: 025-DSC_7595: The entrtance to the Short Cove trail. 026-DSC_7579: On the Short Cobe trail. 027-DSC_7580: A sideways smiling-mouth tree on the trail (visible in the previous photo. 028-DSC_7582: Some colorful flowers in a meadowy area along the Short Cove trail. 029-DSC_7583: A closer view of the colorful flowers on the Short Cove trail. 030-DSC_7585: More flowers along the trail with a bit more green and purplish hue. 031-DSC_7587: Wild weirdberries along the path with Short Cove in the distance. 032-DSC_7594: Short Cove. 033-DSC_7596: A badass tree. It first looks sort of like a face, but with wire gouging into it. However, on closer inspection, it's clear the tree grew into the wire fence. And at each point of contact, it formed a bad-ass mouth. But the most bad-ass part is if you look at the top right wire, you'll notice it's barbed wire, but only on the right side. The tree fucking chewed up the barbed with fence and snapped it off and is using part of it as a tooth pick! Don't fuck with this tree! 034-DSC_7598: Lots of logs and stuff. 035-DSC_7599: It seems like these are for making trailriding more challenging. 036-DSC_7600: We saw some people riding horses and jumping them over some of this just off the trail. 037-DSC_7601: The enbtrance to the trail to the left, the entrance to private property (that does horse riding and jumping), and a name on the rock that makes me want to say "de deee de de-de" in reply even if it's a syllable short. 038-Short-Cove_Panorama1: A panoramic photo looking south from Short Cove onto the Tisbury Great Pond. You can see the land boundry on the central horizon. It is not directly connected to open ocean. Bottom:
