The Oslo City Hall (Oslo rådhus) is a red brick building, built between 1931 and 1950. One tower is 63 meters (206 feet) and the other is 66 meters (216 feet) tall. The Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is held there every December. Our walking tour of Oslo included the City Hall. And no, you can't fight City Hall. It's a pretty big building. We gathered outside of it and Irena the tour guide talked about some of its history then we went in. 001-DSC_3267: The Olso City Hall. 002-DSC_3268: Left side of City Hall. 003-DSC_3269: Center and right side of City Hall. 004-DSC_3270: The two goose statue in front of Oslo City Hall. 005-DSC_3271: The tour group enters the building. The doors are pretty huge. 006-DSC_3272: The artwork generally has a theme of the people. 007-DSC_3273: A view from the steps of the Oslo City Hall. 008-DSC_3274-header: The Main Hall 008-DSC_3274-headertext:
The main hall is almost 69 feet (21 meters) high. The walls have murals on them depicting Norwegian life, WWII occupation, and more. 008-DSC_3274: The mural on the far wall depicts Oslo's patron saint, St. Hallvard, families, and more. 009-DSC_3275: The stairway to the second floor and two observation boxes. 010-DSC_3276: The left side wall shows the Nazi occupation of Norway in WWII. Without using any iconic swastikas, it's still easy to tell who the bad guys are. 011-DSC_3278: Looking up at the ceiling of the Main Hall in Oslo City Hall. 012-DSC_3280: Looking towards the far side of the hall. 013-DSC_3281: A dark shot with a view of the Oslofjord through the windows. 014-DSC_3282: Another view of the stairs and viewing boxes. 015-DSC_3283: Looking back to the entrance. The mural shows Norwegian life. The workers, the fishermen, the farmers, the lumberjacks. The man on the right looking towards a new future and maybe the labor movement. The man on the left might have been some industrious farmer? I like how the sunbeam illuminates the picture. 016-DSC_3285: Art and a fountain at the base of the stairs. 017-DSC_3286: Faith caught in the act of standing on the 2nd floor balcony in Oslo City Hall. 017-city_hall_Panorama: A slightly panoramic picture of the Main Hall taken from the second floor. 018-DSC_3287-header: Second Floor Galleries 018-DSC_3287-headertext:
The second floor contains various galleries including the Munch room that has one of his paintings, the Fest or Party Hall, the Dining Hall, the Gift Gallery, which contains display cases of gifts given to Oslo or Norway, and the City Council Assembly Room. 018-DSC_3287: Information on the Munch Room (does not rhyme with lunch). 019-DSC_3288: The Munch Room with his painting Life on the far wall. 020-DSC_3289: The Fest Gallery 021-DSC_3290: The Fest Gallery 022-DSC_3291: Blue couches and a tapestry depicting workers. 023-DSC_3292: Looking out the window to the Oslofjord beyond City Hall. 024-DSC_3293: The door from the Fest Gallery to the Banquet Hall. 025-DSC_3294: Ummm...I'm not sure who this is...Vlad the Miltiary, Vampire King? 026-DSC_3295: I don't know who she is either, but it appears she has the power to harvest the color blue. 027-DSC_3296: Maybe Harald V, ruling Norway from 1991 to the present. 028-DSC_3297: I think this is King Haakon VIII who ruled Norway from 1905-1957. 029-DSC_3298: A mural on the wall at the end of the Banquet Hall. 030-DSC_3299: The Banquet Hall in the Oslo City Hall (more shadowy). 031-DSC_3300: The Banquet Hall in the Oslo City Hall (more lit). 032-DSC_3301: Paintings in the Eastern Gallery (øster galleri). 033-DSC_3302: Industrious, social, busy, working bees. 034-DSC_3303: Murals on the ceiling. 035-DSC_3304: The City Council Assembly Room. 036-DSC_3305: The back of the City Council Assembly Room. 037-DSC_3307: The central podium in the Assembly Room. The tapestry shows St. Hallvard, Oslo's patron saint, with the Seven Virtues, and the life and times of the city.
