Gudvangen is a small town is at the southern base of the Nærøyfjord,
which is fed by the Nærøydalselvi river. Actually, on the map, the
only things that are listed are a gas station, and electric vehicle
charging station, a car rental agency, some camping, a convenience
store, and an art gallery.
So maybe "small town" is overselling it a bit.
We were at a port where the fjord boats come.
We had around an hour before the boat arrived. In the summer months,
there's a Viking Village called Njardarheimr just across a footbridge on
the Nærøydalselvi. The name means a home dedicated to the norse god Njord.
It's a recreation of a village 1000 years ago, populated with people
doing their everyday Viking things..
Since this was April, it wasn't open. Mostly there was a restaurant
and gift shop. And bathrooms. There were a couple people dressed as
Vikings in the parking lot posing with tourists.
While there wasn't that much to see until the boat arrived, the
snowcapped mountains surrounding the glacial valley (and fjord)
were quite striking and beautiful.
