Subtitle: The Great Pacific Northwest Adventure started in Seattle. I
was there for the DFRWS conference. I was in Seattle from August 7-11,
2016. Other than doing DFRWS-related things, I explored the Seattle
Central Library a bit, went to Pike Place Market, and walked to the
Space Needle. I also caught up with my grad school friend Neel.
Other pages from the Pacific Northwest trip:
003-DSC_8911-header: Seattle Central Library
003-DSC_8911-headertext: The Seattle Central Library is a neat place. The
architecture kicks ass and was designed by Rem Koolhaas. It is a
very cool house.
003-DSC_8911: A few shots of the building.
004-DSC_8913:
005-DSC_8915: Outside the building but under the gridwork.
006-DSC_8916:
007-DSC_8917: There are funky yellow-ish escalators.
008-DSC_8918: Kind of one of the main areas.
008a-DSC_8966: My friend Neel on the escalator. Chronologically,
this was a few days later from the other shots, when the two of us
wandered around town a bit.
009-DSC_8919: There's another escalator that goes up to a few more floors.
010-DSC_8921: Alternatively, there are stairs too. Technically, I cheated
a little on this and made the top a little darker so the gridwork beyond
the windows at the top is still visible.
011-DSC_8925: A few from the top floor of the ceiling-windows.
012-DSC_8926:
013-DSC_8928: The view of downtown from the top.
014-DSC_8929: And looking down to the stacks below.
014a-DSC_8970: Neel too a few pictures of me at the top.
014b-DSC_8977: Another one of me at the highest (public) viewpoint
in the building.
015-DSC_8930: Elsewhere, instead of yellow-ish escalators, there is a very,
very deep red tunnel with stairs going down to it.
016-DSC_8931: Everything on this floor is reall, really red.
017-DSC_8932: A porthole in the wall opens onto one of the yellow-ish
escalators. Trippy.
018-DSC_8936: A board had Shakespearean magnetic poetry on it. I added
a line using available resources. It's in the middle and reads "prithee
tell they tale".
019-DSC_8937: A semi-random picture of downtown Seattle looking
towards the water.
020-DSC_8938: A few more shots of the outside of the library.
021-DSC_8939:
022-DSC_8940:
023-DSC_8942:
024-DSC_8943:
025-DSC_8944:
025a-building_Panorama: A (semi) panorama shot of a weird building
that has a tapered bottom that's like a pencil. This was just two pictures.
026-DSC_8945-header: Pike Place Market and Vicinity
026-DSC_8945-headertext: Pike Place Market is a large are that is a farmer's
market and lots of other stuff, stores, shops, restaurants, that's by the
water, Elliott Bay, that opens into Puget Sound. I wandered around there
for a bit, both with Neel and my last day in Seattle.
026-DSC_8945: A view of Elliott Bay.
027-DSC_8946: Another from the continuing series of Frank Reacts to Signs. I
don't know what that sign is about. Neel took that picture.
028-DSC_8954: A neat fountain.
029-DSC_8955: Pike Place Market from the back side.
030-DSC_8956: I don't know why there's a bronze pig theme, but I remembered
seeing another one by the entrance, so I took a picture of this one by the
back entrance.
031-DSC_8957: The front side of Pike Place Market.
032-DSC_8960: And the other pig I mentioned. I have been on that pig
before (in 2004).
033-DSC_8962: A shot of the inside of the market (holding the camera over my
head). It was crowded.
033a-crane_Panorama: From a shop in Pike Place Market, I had a view of a
tower crane. I took a vertical panoramic shot of it, though it only includes
4 stories of it (it was easily 4 times as big). It was cook to see
some of the structure up close. And yes, there's a big discontinuity
artifact visible on the cable that as a result of stitching the
pictures together. Still, it's mostly OK.
037-DSC_8983: A view of Elliott Bay, with a large ship there, mountains in the
distance, and a seaplane in the air.
038-DSC_8984-header: Downtown Seattle
038-DSC_8984-headertext: After Pike Place Market, I walked further north
mostly following the water, eventually heading to the space needle.
038-DSC_8984: A guy on a lift was waiting, rather bored, while his co-worker
refueld the machine. I thought it was interesting.
039-DSC_8985: Art!
040-DSC_8986: There was a herd of goats in a fenced in area by the
highway. They were from "Rent-A-Ruminant, Herds for Hire" and they
eat the grass, weeds, and pretty much anything in spaces where it's hard
to get machinery in.
041-DSC_8987:
042-DSC_8988: A Frequently Asked Questions sheet on "Why Goats?"
043-DSC_8989: The goat had a lot of burs on its beard. I don't think
it cared.
044-DSC_8990: Marijuana is legal in Washington State. This was a place called
"Herban Legends" I saw from across the street. I didn't go in.
045-DSC_8996-header: The Space Needle
045-DSC_8996-headertext: The Space Needle is probably the most
recognizable and iconic structure in and of Seattle. The area around it
has various musuem-like things, including the EMP (music and science-fiction)
and a Chihuly Garden and Glass. I walked around the area a bit, though I
didn't go inside any of the buildings.
045-DSC_8996: I had been walking north along the water and then started to
head east, uphill. I finally spotted the Needle through the trees when I
was a few blocks away.
045a-iliad_Panorama: There's a sculpture in the park by the Needle called
Olympic Illiad. A bigger version is here at the Storm King Arts Center in NYS. [Update Link]
046-DSC_8997: Information about Olympic Illiad
047-DSC_8998: The Chihuly Garden and Glass with some cool large glass
sculptures.
048-DSC_8999: The base of the Space Needle with the elevators visible.
049-DSC_9000: A sort of greenhouse with Chihuly glass in it.
050-DSC_9001: Some real flowers in front of a poster of Chihuly glass flowers.
051-DSC_9003: Lots of pretty white flowers.
052-DSC_9004: Looking up at the Space Needle.
052a-cn_Panorama: A vertical panoramic shot of the Seattle Space Needle.
