Martha's Vineyard (June 2017)

I spent a few days on Martha's Vineyard, from Wednesday June 14 to Saturday June 17, 2017, visiting my sister while she was out there. We hiked around a few places, plus I explored Vineyard Haven, and some areas near the Lagoon Pond. And then Monday morning it was super-foggy, which was kind of cool.

172 photos included.

Flying to Martha's Vineyard

I flew the flying club's Mooney (7CF) from Ithaca to Martha's Vineyard. Nice clear day to fly.

Fulling Mill Brook Preserve

Fulling Mill Brook Preserve is a hiking trail in a wooded area (with a brook that goes through it) is part of the Martha's Vineyard Land Bank, located in Chilmark, near Beetlebung Corner. Also, there's some hills on the trail, something I don't really associate much with the Island.

Farm Pond Preserve

Farm Pond Preserve, near Oak Bluffs, is part of the MV Landbank. There's a path that goes around the pond, mostly a wooden walkway above the wetland area, which then heads into the woods. It goes to the Trade Winds Field Preserve (grass strip airport and another MV Landbank site).

The Lagoon Pond Drawbridge

While I was taking pictures of a foggy morning, I heard the siren indicating that the drawbridge was going to open. I took a series of pictures of traffic stopping (this is the only traffic light on the entire island), the gates coming down, then the bridge opening. And then eventually the process reverses. I didn't actually get any pictures of the boat passing through the bridge, though I got one picture of a small motorboat cruising across the Lagoon. I liked mysterious feel to the fog.

A Foggy Morning

I woke up on Saturday morning and we were pretty solidly fogged in. It's always foggy in the morning when I play to fly from Martha's Vineyard, so I'm kind of used to it by now. It started to improve around 11am, and was fine by 1 or 2pm (although still cloudly enough to require instrument flying).

I decided to take some pictures since the fog was pretty thick and gave the boats and other objects in the Lagoon have a very stark, isolated look.
