Fairbanks: Farmer's Market, University, Museuem, and More

The Great Alaksa Adventure, 2011. We set up our Base of Operations in Fairbanks (Stephanie's brother lives there and generously let us stay there). We explored various places in and around Fairbanks.

This includes the Fairbank's Farmer's Market, an area to the north of Fairbanks (near Fox?), The University of Alsaska at Fairbanks, and the Museum of the North, at the University.

Click on the thumbnail images to get larger ones (around 100-300K). Click on the "huge" link to get the full size pictures (around 3M). Around 55 pictures included.

Farmer's Market

Went to the Farmer's Market in Fairbanks.

[Almost a minyan?]

A couple shots that make a pseudo-panorama of the market from behind the food booths, where there is some seating, though we were on the grass. And a shot of a building at the market and taped to a portable tent, a flyer about a Klezmer band in Fairbanks, "Short of a Minyan" which just kind of amused me.

North edge of Fairbanks

We went to an area on the north side of Fairbanks.

Black spruce trees are indicative of permafrost below, since they have shallow roots.

Two shots of a street sign that I've never seen before. This is an area with active dog sleds. In summer, it's just got a lot of dogs (at least I could hear them).

The University of Alaska at Fairbanks

Went spent some time at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

At the entrance to the Unversity. What is the temperature, you ask? What about in Celcius? And then, what time is it? All are answered.

[The Gruening Building (not Groening)]
bigger
huge

The Gruening Building is named after Alaska's first senator. It is not a pretty building. Unlike the Musuem of the North, which is a very impressive building.

The Musuem of the North

We went to The University of Alaska Museum of the North. It combines art, science, culture, history, ethnography, and a few other aspects of Alaska in a very cool, modern looking package.

[Museum of the North (panorama)]
bigger
huge

This is a poor-man's poorly stitched panoramic shot of the museum. You can see artifacts of the merge at the front corner of the building. It still looks reasonably OK and the building is cool. The 'bigger' picture is the thumbnail, the 'huge' is more like the 'bigger' size.

Then, turning around, a few of Fairbanks from the front entrance of the musuem. The first shot has the backside of the museum's sign. The second is a view to the right of the sign, and then a view of the sign, with Stephanie taking a picture of the view of Fairbanks.

Two shots of the museum, one with and one without Stephanie. It wasn't actually intentional. I had been waiting for other people to walk out of the frame before I took the picture and then just as I took the shot, she popped out. Oh well.

There's a small garden in front of the musem with a variety of pretty flowers. I really don't know much about kind of flowers they are, so I'll just leave it at "pretty flowers."

A view of the front entrance of the museum. And a picture of me in front of a rather large bear.

The Musuem of the North's Private Collection

Derek Sikes, Curator of Insects at the musem, gave us a tour of the museum's private collection.

But it's not all bugs. On the other side, they have some fish-like things. The first shot is of one of the racks. It looks like something from Zabars or some other "specialty food" store. Then I tried out the extension tube on lone frm Stephanie's brother on her camera. (Yes, for the technical purist, some pictures in this collection were shot with a Nikon D60 and others a D70. I also borrowed her camera when the battery in mine went dead. Photo sequence numbers are the giveaway.) Then, a couple of macro close-ups of some vials.

The Musuem of the North's Bug Collection

Derek gave us a tour of his lab. I took some pictures of some of the bugs that looked the most striking with the macro lens (or rather the extension tube). They were all in the same case.

[Shiny, copper green bug]

The first picture is of a stag beetle. The second is of some shiny, golden bugs, likely scarab beetles. The third is an iridescent green bug, not sure what kind it is.

[Longhorned beetle]

[Dragonfly]

The first picture is of, uh, well, I don't really know what kind of bug it is. The second is a Longhorned beetle. And the third is of a dragonfly (with the wings nicely in focus).

[Beetle]

[Millipede]

[Eye spot on wing from a moth]

The first shot is of some sort of beetle. The next is a picture of a millipede. I thought of taking 3 shots of it, since I only covered about 1/3 of it, but then didn't care enough to bother. The last is of eye spots on the wing of a moth (it's for decoration only; it just makes it look like it's watching you).
