Fall in the Fingerlakes Region – Part 2

Living in Ithaca, NY, there are a lot of beautiful things to see. Fall in the Finger Lakes region is always a beautiful time of year. On Sunday, October 8, 2006, I hiked around the upper trail of Buttermilk Falls State Park, with Brendan, Kristen, and Kathryn. It was a beautiful, warm October day, in the 70s (or 20s if you're metric). It's a very pretty park, with gorges, waterfalls, and other Ithaca type stuff.

So here are the results. About 45 pictures.

Click on the thumbnail images to get larger ones (around 100-300K). Click on the "huge" link to get the full size pictures (around 3M). 30 pictures included.

I also took some pictures of the marina and some from the air, and those pictures are on hte previous web page.

Buttermilk Falls State Park

Buttermilk Falls State Park is on the south end of Ithaca. It has trails and gorges and waterfalls and the like. The only downside is that through various corrupt political machinations, a large chain home improvement store opened across the street, which generally ruins the view from certain overlooks (it really is pretty awful). But as long as you're not facing west, things are fine.

We started from the Upper Falls area and walked down to the main park. Then Kristen stayed behind with Kathryn, who decided she needed some time to play on the playground, and Brendan and I walked back up to retrieve the car.

Signs, signs, everywhere a sign. Welcome to the park. Speed limit (no swimming on the road). And the bear trail (for pedestrian bears only, none of those circus bears driving their Shriner's cars).

More gorge action, and two shots of a waterfall. The second one is looking more to the left, so you can see the trail to the side of it.

The first shot is of a big honking rock formation. Or rather, what's left after everything around it was cut away. The second is of a "pothole" in the stream, which is caused by a rock that spins around and around carving out a circle (so says geologist Nicole; see my summer wasn't completely wasted). And the third is of the trees and sky around the top of the gorge.

The first two shots are of the same waterfall, and fit together. I don't know if it was intentional, but it kind of works here. The third is more waterfall action.

Another shot looking up. I like how the shadows of the trees form a nice silhouette that frame the picture. The second and third shots show Brendan and Kathryn on the trail, as they caught up with us while Kristen and I were standing on a bridge.

The first shot is a view of the Buttermilk Creek from the bridge. We played "Pooh-Sticks" for a while there. The second and third shots are of the fall colors on the trees with the blue sky.

A few shots of waterfall action. There are a lot of waterfalls on the trail.

Two shots of a tree that was growing over a rock. It looked like it was just sitting on top of it.

I tried to get a shot of Brendan and Kristen together. I failed. As Brendan assumed a pioneering pose, Kristen decided there was something worth looking at elsewhere, and wandered away. Brendan, left behind, assumed a less pioneering, more natural pose.

Two shots of waterfalls through the trees. There was an observation point where the view was ruined by the store. While I gawked at it in disgust, Brendan laid down and rested, while Kathryn played around him. Even though it appears that Kathryn is checking to see if he is dead, and Kristen is walking away indifferently, that's not quite what was going on.

The trail, covered with leaves. Brendan and Kathryn are at the bottom of the trail. Kathryn was hopping down the steps. And there's some random person sitting on a step. The second shot is of more trees and shadows. And the third is of the big waterfall at the bottom of the trail.

One more of the big waterfall, and one showing the blue sky (and the falls looking dark). And another of the yellow leaves of the tree with the blue sky.

As Brendan and I hiked back up on the other side of the creek, we saw a cool spiral vine. It had grown around someting, and thickened up so it looked like really cool, really weird wood. Once we were back, at the bottom, I took another shot of the yellow leaves, as they were catching some sunlight.

And finally, a shot of me, looking intrepid or something. A shot of Brendan, joyous as he gives birth, and some cool red leaves illuminated by the sunlight.
