The Lagoon Pond at Martha's Vineyard

I visited Martha's Vineyard, July 24-27, 2009. I've been there many times before, as my family has had a small place there for quite a while. I took a few pictures wandering around our backyard and crossing over to the Lagoon Pond.

Behind the House

There's a stream that runs behind the house. And then beyond it is the Lagoon Pond. It's nice, though the size of the stream depends on the tide and the moon and is inversely proportional to the size of the back yard.

Here's a shot of the back of the house from the far side of the stream.

Neighbors have put up a very narrow foot bridge across the stream a little ways down from us. Beyond the stream, but before the Lagoon, there are some telephone poles, and there were a few small boats tied up there.

One boat was white with an orange tip (bow, to be all nautical-like), that I thought looked kind of cool. The back of our house is in the distance on the right side of the stream.

The Lagoon Pond

The Lagoon Pond is a sheltered area. During storms, boats sometimes tie up there. There is a drawbridge that separates it from the Vineyard Haven Harbor, which, more or less, opens up onto the Atlantic Ocean (plus or minus a sound). The Lagoon Pond is accessible from the road and from our backyard. It's a public area, so anyone can wander around, though it's rarely crowded. It's not a big beach, rather small actually.

The first picture is a shot of the Lagoon, looking towards the State Lobster Hatchery. The second shot is looking towards the drawbridge. A new, temporary bridge is under construction, so they can then replace the main bridge.

A shot of the beach, looking towards Beach Road where the bridge is. Another one looking across the Lagoon, and a shot of some boats in the water. The sky was a bit grey out.

There was an oarboat on the beach, tied up so it wouldn't float away at high tide. I liked the colors, though they are a bit muted because it wasn't a sunny day. I took two pictures of the boat, and one more shot of the drawbridge construction.

The Beach by the Pond

And a few shots of the beach itself, that's by the Lagoon Pond.

And finally, a shot of some of the seaweed on the beach, and then two shots of the seaweed that's in the water. There are often rather nice rocks and shells that can be found there.
