Portland Gardens 2010

In August 2010, I spent two weeks in the Pacific Northwest, both for work and vacation. Here are some photo highlights from my time off.

Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden is "one of the most authenic Japanese gardens outside of Japan" (according to their web site). It's a cool place with 5 different styles (Flat Garden, Strolling Pond Garden, Tea Garden, Natural Garden, Sand and Stone Garden).

The first two shots are of the view of downtown Portland from the gardens. On a clear day, you can see Mt. Hood. This was not a clear day.

The first two are pictures of the Flat Garden. The last is of some low, bamboo edging along the grass. It was a very low shot, as it only is about a foot high.

The first two shots are of the Sand and Stone Garden from above. It's a little difficult to see the patterns in the stones from the medium size shot. The last shot is of a shrine from the Strolling Pond Garden.

Then three pictures of the Sand and Stone Garden from a sand and stone point of view (low angle). Mostly me experimenting.

Three shots of the pond and waterfall from the Strolling Pond Garden. It's quite pretty.

Two shots of Coi fish in the Strolling Pond Garden. The last shot is of the Moon Bridge in the Strolling Pond Garden. That's one of my favorite pictures.

International Rose Test Garden

Right next to the Japanese Garden was the International Rose Test Garden. Basically, it's got a lot of roses...a whole lot of roses.

In the first picture, my friend Diane is in front of the entrance. The entrance and sign are visible in the second shot. And in the third, we have, surprise, surprise, a row of roses!

Three pictures of roses. I don't know details about them, but they are all quite pretty. So many different variations in shape, color and shade.

More roses, including two rather pale ones.

Still more roses. In the first, it's a veritable bouquet in one bush. The second shows a row and the variety that can be found in such close proxmity. The third shows that there are a lot of flowers in a given row.

Then there is the Shakespeare Garden. It contains not-roses—actually any flower that was mentioned in a Shakespeare play. I've no idea what the plants are in the second and third pictures...I thought they might be bleeding hearts, but they don't look like it now.

[Update] Di pointed out to me that those flowers are fuschias.

Pretty purple flowers in the Shakespeare Garden. I've no idea what they are.

[Update] Di pointed out to me that those flowers as astilbes.

A shot of the fountain in the main rose garden. I had to wait a while for people who were standing by the fountain to move on their way. The next two shots are of rose pedals floating in the fountain. I thought they looked kind of cool.

A sculpture nearby the fountain and finally a shot of Diane and me using the standard arm's-length technique.
