Pacific Coast of Oregon

In August 2010, I spent two weeks in the Pacific Northwest, both for work and vacation. Here are some photo highlights from my time off.

Cannon Beach

Cannon Beach is on the Portland Coast, about 1.5 - 2 hours from Oregon. Years ago, I was out on the Oregon coast with some friends and we found a really cool pull-off on the side of the road, and found a mostly isolated beach with tidal pools and lots of cool stuff. I hoped to be able to find that place. I didn't. Cannon Beach was the closest I got.

It's not a bad place. It just had a lot of people, it was a kind of gloomy day there, and it was high tide, so the tidal pools were inaccessible. I didn't have enough time to go up and down the coast, so I probably was close but not quite close enough to The Spot where we once were. The people at the Tourist Information hut weren't particularly helpful, since they're job isn't to guide people away from their town to secluded, cool places that no one has heard of.

So...Cannon Beach. The first two are almost panoramic. I've got a few shots of the foggy, cloudy hills later. The third is of a lighthouse out on a rock.

The first one is looking to the right along the beach to the hillside. The second shows some signs at the entrance to the public beach. The third is of Haystack Rock which is a fairly well known rock that has tidal pools and the like at low tide.

A close up of the top of Haystack Rock. The little white dots on it are birds (seagulls I think). The second and third are off the right edge of Haystack Rock with a little piece sticking out of the water. The two shots have different exposure settings.

The first two shots are a panoramic style close-up of the hillside with the clouds obscuring the trees. The last shot is of the ocean waves heading towards the beach.

A close-up of the ocean waves breaking as they approach the shore, and a shot of the edge of the beach, with the water at a low, just as a wave is about to roll in. The last picture is of a kid flying a kite with a yellow tail.

A shot of the beach and the people in it (fading into the fog). And a shot of some signs, one showing a Tsunami Evacuation Map.

After Cannon Beach, I headed to Hillsdale, to visit a friend I knew from playing Ultimate in Ithaca. We played some pick-up with a group. It was rather disorganized. I borrowed a pair of shoes (with cleats, a rarity for me) from Diane's husband Nate. Diane and Nate are also former Ithaca Ultimate people. Nate's shoe (I believe it was the Cruel Shoes model from Nike) viciously attacked my heel.

Finally, a picture of Michael and his dog Kelsey and a picture of me and Michael in his house. We both look like we just came from playing Ultimate.
