Worlds End State Park, PA

I visited Worlds End State Park in Pennsylvania, September 25-27, 2009 to mount a mini-expedition with my friend Deepak. We stayed at a campsite and did day hikes with the goal of taking pictures. The weather forecast predicted rain, giving it a 100% chance! Weather forecasters never ascribe anything with certainty, or at least almost never. So when they say it's going to rain and give themselves no wiggle room, then damn it, it will rain. And it did.

So our travels were cut short. We set up camp Friday night under a clear sky filled with stars. Saturday morning we went hiking around some of the trails like the Canyon Vista trail and the Words End Trail and in the afternoon went on part of the High Rocks Trail, but rain was already moving in. So we cut short some of our hiking, since we really weren't into getting totally soaked. It rained all night and (as it turned out) most of the following day, so we bailed out early. But we got a few pictures from our Saturday morning hiking.

The Hike

We started the hike fairly early in the morning, like before 8am. At some point, we finally saw morning light breaking through the forest. It was cool seeing one fern being illuminated by a light shaft, while most other things weren't lit up yet.

Three shots of Cottonwood Falls. The waterfall itself is pretty blown out in the pictures.

Next to the small waterfall was a stream of water drops. Since it was first thing in the morning, light was limited. I think this was a 14 second shot with the camera sitting on a rock. Some wind gusted by and blew a bunch of leaves into the pool of water and they were circling around. In the next two shots you can see from the blur of the leaves that they're whirling around in a circle.

The traditional shot looking up through the trees to the clear blue morning sky. The night had been completely clear. Yet we knew there was a 100% chance of rain later in the afternoon. The second shot is looking downstream of Cottonwood falls, with some logs forming an "X" in the stream. I think I used a flash to fill in some light.

It was still a bit too early for really good fall colors. Some trees had the beginnings of color, but it was limited. However, there were a lot of leaves. Two shots of the carpet of leaves along the trails. The second shot trying for more of a contrast with the vertical lines of the trees with the green in them, but alas it's a bit blurry.

And finally three shots of the Loyalsock Creek Gorge from the scenic overlook from the Canyon Vistal Trail. The first and last show the rolling hills, and the second one shows the creek. The trees weren't really colorful yet and the sky was gray. So while the view was nice, the light and colors were all pretty muted. Clouds had just appeared, we never saw them come in. A few hours later the rain started and continued through the night and all the next day, which is why these are the last pictures.
