From here we see the death and deprivation in Ireland during the famine. No, not that. It was the hunger, that incomprehensible force that for unimaginable reasons drove them away from their country of origin. What did they hunger for? Was it open space? Was it adventure? Was companionship of others who came from Ireland? No one knows. No one can know. But with a certainty, it drove them across the ocean. The other side of the monument shows them digging graves. I assume it's at home, though many died on the ships, as well as in the US.
