Patapsco Valley State Park, MD

Since we ended our West Virginia camping a day early, my friend Deepak and I went to a local park in Maryland, neary the BWI airport, called the Patapsco Valley State Park and spent and hour or two wandering around and taking pictures. This was Sunday Jul 20, 2008. Here are a few pictures from it.

Deepak loaned me a Nikon D40 camera to test drive, including wide angle and telephoto zoom lenses.

The Stream

The first stop in our little walk was along a stream with a very small waterfall. It was a warm day and wading in the stream was very pleasant. There were a good number of people walking the trails at the time, though I avoiding including people in these shots.

After that, some rocks on the edge of the stream. The second and third shots are of an unshaded, bright spot where the sun was hitting the ground, with two different exposure settings.

A fast shot freezing the water and a slow one streaming it down.

The Woods

The trail then went through the woods. There were mountain bikers that would periodically pass by, but they all seemed pretty conscientious of not wanting to hit or even disturb people on the trail, which was good.

The sunlight was illuminating the white bark of a tree that had fallen and one that was standing. I played a little with framing the white tree in the background with a darker tree in the foreground in the last two shots.

And another bright spot in the forest. It looked cool.

Fungus

There was a small wooden footbridge that crossed the stream. At the edge of it, I noticed some fungus was growing. I took a few pictures of it, while standing in the stream.

Two side shots of the fungus. I was trying to get the depth of field so that the fungus in the middle was in focus while the others behind and in front of it were not.

Two shots a bit further back. I wanted to include the little green plant in the background that was being illuminated by the sun while everything else was shaded. The last shot is of a similar plant catching the sunlight, again, a tight depth of field.
