The race starts at 10pm. Last minute registration ends at 9pm. It was about 77°F out (25°C for those metrically inclined) and sunny, so costumes could get a bit warm.

Bees without bee keepers (he showed up later). Some blue-man-group-ish sorts (it seemed like a warm sort of costume).oSome superheros.

Fruit of Balloon (a clever pun). Some hippies show up, with superheroes and fruit of balloon nearby. Captain America (and someone who didn't really want to be in the picture).

Nancy Kerrigan in a wheelchair (note the blood on the bandage) and Tonya Harding. Nancy was yelling "Why ME??!!!??" Yes, she was pushed for the whole 6 miles. I think Tonya got the short end of the stick, er, so to speak.

Batman (superheroes were very popular). A pair of costumes: a pool wrack and a billiards table. Apparently their third member, who was a glass of beer, did not show up.

Alice in Wonderland (with the March Hare, the Queen of Hearts, and the Mad Hatter). The Over the Hill Roller Derby (they had funny names on their back, but I forget them). And Batman and Batwoman with some Fruit of Balloons next to them.

More superheroes (Marvel AND DC, though Wonder Woman's hairy chest is a bit off-putting). A mammoth (with a rider, I think). Hippies.

Captain America strikes a pose (points for style). Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head arriving and taking a bow.

The Germinators, supporting local plants. "Gang Green" (with the appropriate puns). And Pac Man (another hot costume with poor visibility; we saw them taking a break at one point about halfway through the race).

No costume party or dress-up event is complete without some Star Wars representation. So two people fullfilled that role as Imperial Storm Troupers. Unfortunatley they didn't really pose for the audience, they just walked by. Later, someone in a Minnie Mouse costume posed with the Storm Troupers while they were arresting her. I was about to take a picture when her friend walked in front of me blocking the shot, and a second later, Minnie Mouse walked away from them. So here's Minnie's friend, posing with them, though they aren't attacking her or anything.

I think these were the Desperate Tudor Housewives. Nice costumes.

And the scariest costumes of them all. Frank as Frank, and Stephanie as Running Stephanie. Plus one of Mary, Frank, and Stephanie. I walked the 6 miles with Mary, who knows like 83% of the population of Fairbanks. it was kind of cool.

Stephanie is at the center of the first picture. She's also at the center of the second picture, taken almost at the same time, but zoomed out (using cues like the kid with the blue shirt and the one with the yellow help orient the second picture).

Since I was walking, I stood off to the side of the runners at the start. The first poicture is looking to the front towards the starting line, adn the second is looking back.

When we started walking there was a guy dressed as a fireman (fire fighter, whatever). When asked how heavy the costume was, he said that he had reduced the wait a lot and it was pretty light, only 30 pounds. Ooof! The second picture is right after a turn in a residential neighbornood, looking back. The third is looking forward after that turn.

It was common for people to have sprinklers, hoses, and squirt guns along the way (we missed hte water balloons, but saw the aftermath). Generally they were pretty polite about only squirting people who wanted it. There was a model hobby store with the starship Enterprise. By definition, it's a cool place. And finally, a shot of the sun as it's still above the horizon at 11:30pm (the biggest picture might have EXIF data for those who are curious; it's 4 hours off since the camera was set for eastern time).
