Fill in whatever fields of the search box you wish.
The checkboxes in Type of album are inclusive or
additive. So checking "Places" and "Events" show all
entries having a places or events tag
(or both, i.e., a logical OR operation).
The Tags field is the only one that will match
the words individually. All other fields will try to fit
the search term exactly as it is. So for all other fields,
if two words are entered, it will search for a string that
has those two words one after the other with a space between
them (or two if you put two spaces in the search).
The tags search returns results that match all of
the search terms (i.e., a logical AND operation). So,
use a single word as a tag to cast a broad net, and add
further tags to restrict the search.
The Country field is usually the full name of the country.
I have added USA as an abbreviation for the United States, and
UK for England. I know UK includes Scotland, Wales, and Northern
Ireland too, and when I visit those countries, I will probably
update the code, Note that typing "US" will match "USA",
"Australia", and "Austria". I consider that a feature.
All searches are case-insensitive.
The And/Or radio buttons mean should this search term be ANDed or
ORed to the existing search terms. The default is AND (which is
more restrictive).
There is no way to change the search order currently.
The Description field is what is in the short
description when there are matches.
Again, the line is taken as a single-item exact match.
Clicking on the More details part of the result will
show the various metadata that is associated with that album.
It might provide other search terms or phrases I might have
used to describe the album.
I am aware that this, as well as the rest of the site, likely
looks terrible on a phone. I find phone layouts to be terrible
in general, and looking at photos on something the size of your
hand can work in a pinch, but it's kind of terrible. I don't
have any great ideas on how to make it better, and I'd have to
support Android and iPhone, when the reality is that essentially
no one is going to be looking at these pages other than friends
and relatives.
I'm using a bit more CSS here, but no Javascript, as it's really
not necessary.
This page includes night pictures from Stockholm and a tour of the Stockholm City Hall (Stockholm Stadshuset), and the City Hall Park (Stadshusetparken).
This page includes pictures from the train ride from Norrköping to Stockholm and exploring Stockholm. That includes the narrow, twisty streets of the Old Town (Gamla Stan), a Fika break (and watching a protest), waterfront areas including the King's Garden (Kungsträdgården), plus tapas and hotel hijinx.
This page includes pictures from a walking tour of Norrköping, including the Visualzation Center, various bridges and waterfalls, the Philharmonic Symphony Hall and more.
This page includes pictures from Linköping, wandering along the Kinda Kanal, then the City Park, and the Linköping Cathedral on Saturday March 21, 2026. It also has some sunset/evening pictures, mostly from my hotel room.
I flew from Ithaca to New York (JFK), then to Amsterdam (AMD), and then to Stockholm (ARL), and then took a train from Stockholm to Linkoping. Here are a few highlights from the outbound trip.
We spent most of Saturday at Dover Castle. We took guided tours of the tunnels and The Spur, went to the top of the Great Tower, saw a demonstration of an anti-aircraft gun being fired, saw an ancient Roman-era lighthouse and more.
We explored the town of Dover on Friday afternoon a little, then checked into the Inn around 3pm, and then took a grassy hiking trail along the top of the cliffs west of town. We walked for maybe an hour before turning around. We wanted to get back before it got dark.
On Thursday, Stephanie and I headed up to Ely, a town that's like one or two train stops away. It's a small town that might have been named for the eel fishing.
We visitied Castle Rising in Castle Rising, Norfolk. It was built around 1140, and later was the home of Queen Isabella after she lost power released by her son in 1331-1358.
I attended the DFRWS-EU 2025 conference in Brno, Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria for a week and a half at the very end of March and halfway into the 2nd week of April, 2025. Vienna had the (somewhat) Blue Danube River, the Prater amusement park, St. Stephen's Cathedral, and its old town.
I attended the DFRWS-EU 2025 conference in Brno, Czech Republic and Vienna, Austria for a week and a half at the very end of March and halfway into the 2nd week of April, 2025. Brno was fun with some nice scenic overlooks, a castle, the old town and more.
Bradley took me and Parag (another conference attendee) to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane, about a 25 minute or so drive. They have lots of native animals, including koalas (since they are a koala sanctuary), an emu, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, cassoary (though we never saw it in it's enclosure; Bradley called it a casso-nowhere-y), bats, platypus, lizarsd, and more. And people can buy bags of food to hand feed the kangaroos or wallabies (or see someone they know who is leaving and gives them half a bag of kangaroo food). It's a great place.

I went to the City Botanic Gardens, which consists of a large park with fountains, walking paths, gardens that include collections of unusual species, and more. It's in the Central Business Distict (i.e., central downtown) and is bordered by the Brisbane River, and the Queensland University of Technology.

I figured I should go to a beach at some point and see the Pacific Ocean. I wasn't really intrested in going in the water. I decided to take an excursion to Manly Beach on the northeast side of Sydney (the other option was Bondi Beach to the south, which is the primary surfer beach. I figured I'd try something different. I took the water ferry to Manly, walked by the beach, explored the town a little, and then headed back. The sun was pretty strong and pretty angry that day, and I didn't want to risk really pissing it off.

I took a tour of the Blue Mountains. The first stop was at the Featherdale Wildlife Park that's on the outskirts of Syndey (not really related to the Blue Mountains, but they have cute animals and people taking tours of the area probably want to see cute, local animals too (and they're right). They have lots of native animals, and you can feed the kangaroos (and wallabies, since they're kind of the same thing, especially if you've never seen one before).
The next day I took a trip via a guided tour to the Blue Mountains which starts around 30 miles (50 km) west of Sydney. The tour had several pickup spots, one of which was about 3 blocks away from my hotel (I had passed that place many times). The first stop was at the Featherdale Wildlike Park, which is on the western side of Sydney (Featherdale photos are in Part 4). We then stopped in the town of Leura for lunch. After that we headed on to Echo Point, a lookout on the 3 sisters formation. And then we went to Scenic World which has cable cars that go over the vally, with a view of Katoomba Falls, and also have a rail car that goes down to to Jamison Valley.

I spent a good part of the day at the Toronga Zoo in Sydney on the north side of the harbor. They have a variety of local and non-local animals, and there are several talks daily from some of the keepers of the various animals. I went there and attended a few talks, saw a bunch of animals, and took a lot of pictures.
I attended a conference in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia (DFRWS-APAC 2024) in October for a week. Since I was making the trip, I took another two weeks (one before and one after the conference) to be a tourist. The first stop was Sydney (in New South Wales) and then up to Brisbane. Trip highlights include a tour of the Sydney Opera House, the Tononga Zoo, Featherdale Wildlife Park, and the Blue Mountains in the Sydney area, plus an overnight at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retrest and a visit to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Plus lots of other stuff. 8 galleries, which is why it took me 3 months to get them processed and posted (plus I had to look up a lot of fun facts).
I took a quick trip with two friends up to Niagara-on-the-Lake with a visit to Niagra Falls, in Ontario, Canada. Here are some pictures of the quaint little town and the not-so-quaint, massive falls.

I took the train back up to Madrid on Wednesday afternoon, March 27, 2024. It had been rainy and there was rainbow in the sky when I left the main train station in Madrid (Madrid Atocha). On Thursday I walked around a number of different neighborhoods of the city, mostly west and southwest of the center. On Friday I went to the Naval Museum since it was raining and I wanted to see something other than an art museum. In the evenings, I tried to go to a few different sort of restaurants (paella, tapas, which is a pretty broad term, something that has vegetables and less ham, etc.).

I took the train down to Granada on Monday, March 25, 2024. The train trip took around 4 hours. It was quite pleasant. I did a little exploring nearby that day. On Tuesday, I had booked a tour of Alhambra. Even though it was a rain day (or week), it was quite impressive to see and had a lot of historical significance. My train to Madrid was around 4 in the afternoon, so in the morning I walked into the older areas, then uphill until I got to St. Michael's Lookout, the highest point in Granada, which had a great view of Alhambra, and the approaching rain storm. I walked around downtown Granada and back to the hotel to pick up my bags and took the train north.
Castles, Cooking, Cofee, Climbing (on rocks by other people), Churches, and more! The Saturday after the conference, March 23, 2024, Ricardo, who was the local host of the conference served as a host and took me and a colleague of his, Javier, on an expedition to the north.
The last day of the conference in Zaragoza (March 22, 2024), we had a guided tour of the Aljaferia Palace, a 1000 year old palace that was used when the area was under Muslim control. Later, the Christian kings used it as a residence. Now, besides being a World Heritage site, it is used by the Aragon regional parliament.
My first stop (after flying into Madrid) was Zaragoza, Spain, where I spent the week. My hotel was near the Plaza España, near the city centre/old town area which is where the Pillar Bascilica is which is the center of everything. The Ebro River runs east/west, and our conference was at the University of Zaragoa's engineering campus which was on the north side of the river.
Snow and cold yielded to rain and lesser cold. But then, from that arose an impenetrable fog that enshrouded the area, isolating all, forcing those unfortunate enough to be within its embrace to face their inner fears and speak and write in ominous ways. Such could only come from a Fog...of DOOOOM! To document it for those who might remain, I took a walk around the neighborhood and took some pictures of the fog...of DOOOOM.
Once again, there was some snow out, so I took some pictures before it all melted the next day. This time it was Sapsucker Woods and Sunset Park, both of which are nearby.

I stopped in Boston for a few days to visit some friends. I explored two places while there and took pictures. A wooded area by a reservoir called The Fells and The deCordova Sculpture Park. The first was scenic with fall colors and the second had lots of cool and sometimes odd artwork.

Martha's Vineyard

October 2023

I spent a few days on Martha's Vineyard in mid-October and hung out with my sister. Here are some photos, starting with the ferry trip. About 140 pictures and 1 video.
I took the train from Munich to Frankfurt and checked into a hotel near the airport. I didn't do much other than walking around the area a little and getting some food at a nearby grocery store (it was just a grocery store, I didn't take pictures there).
Munich was the next stop on the trip, after a 3 hour train trip from Bonn. It was a crowded train because a big train strike was going to occur the next day. We got in in mid-afternoon and had a few hours to wander around. I had plans, so many plans for Munich of things to see and do, people to meet, and places to go. Alas, plans change, as did my itinerary.
On Saturday, March 22, 2023, Mowgli and I took a day trip to Koblenz, which is a bit south of Bonn on by the confluence of the Rhine river and the Moselle (Mosel) river
Going from Stuttgart to Bonn required changing trains in Cologne, which is just north of Bonn. We had 15 minutes or so free and right in front of the Cologne train station of HbF (Köln Hauptbahnhof for short) is the Cologne Cathedral (of Saint Peter). Given the people around, the site of the church, and the train we had to catch, I had only enough time to take a few pictures from the outside with the cellphone camera.
Much of my time in Bonn was spent attending the digital forensics conference DFRWS-EU. But there was some time to explore a bit, and after the conference there was an outing to a cold-war era Governement Bunker (Regierungsbunker) that was turned into a museum and then a vineyard/winery (Weingut Kloster Marienthal) which was 2.5 km from the bunker.
I went from the airport at Frankfurt to Stuttgart by train and spent the first few days of the trip there. Mowgli and I went to a variety of places, including Killesberg Hill Park and vicinity, the downtown area, Königsbau and the shopping/restaurant areas downtown, the city library (cooler than it sounds), Uhlandshöhe Park at dusk, and more.
I went to Germany from March 16-30, 2023 for a conference and fun, spending time in Stuttgart, Koblenz, Cologne, Bonn, Munich, and Frankfort and took pictures of some stuff along the way, beginning with The Arrival, which consistes of two pictures of a 777 at the Newark Airport, and 2 of dawn from 38,000 feet, give or take.
I took some pictures of fall colors on the South Hill Recreation Trail plus a few of the 6 Mile Creek dam and another hot air balloon in the area. 28 pictures
Once again I tried to get some pictures of the Perseid Meteor Shower from the top of Mt. Pleasant. I thought I didn't get any, but it looks like I might have got a few at the end. 16 pictures
I went to Martha's Vineyard October 7-12, 2021, to visit my sister and help her close up the place for the winter. Since it was late in the season, it wasn't crowded at all, and the weather wound up being very warm and pleasant. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we mostly walked around where we could be outside and not around tons of people. The weather was conducive to that. I took a bunch of pictures of stuff, including cliffs, beaches, high tides, a few night shots, and more, and have a few nice panoramic shots of places like the Aquinnah Cliffs and Menemsha. There are 6 subpages organized by topic rather than chronologically, so let's start with the glassworks.
My friends Nate and Diane were in town visiting family. We met up at Upper Treman Park and hiked around by the falls and the rim trail. I took some pictures of us, the falls, and the area, including some composite photos (inlcuding a somewhat patchy but big one of Lucifer Falls composed of 19 individual images). It was a nice day for a walk.
I took a few fall pictures around Ithaca and vicinity. Some have proper fall colors, others are a bit gray and foreboding, hinting of seasons to come, or perhaps reminders of seasons that have passed. Also, there was a backhoe in my backyard.
The Comet C/2020 F3 (NEOWISE) was visible just after dusk for a little while, so I went to Sunset Park and took some pictures of it plus a few of the sunset colors over the lake.
I went out at night just around the corner from where I live and took some pictures of fireflies! They were putting on quite a show. In the low light some of the pictures look almost like paintings.
I went on a lunchtime walk with a couple of friends and their dog. After discovering the initial park was too crowded, we went to Ithaca College which was devoid of people (and zombies). I took some pictures of our walk. I took a few shots of Cayuga Lake but I only had a wide angle lens with me so it's barely visible. Also some shots of the woods, flowers, and other stuff. Plus a few pictures of me at bat the first time a group of us got together to do something (outside and masking).
Some picture of a Spooky Salad I made for a Halloween party. Radishes, mini-pepers, and other things were carved and sculpted. It's pretty simple, but it amused me.
10 years after our initial visit to World's End State Park in Pennsylvania, Deepak and I returned to World's End. We went on a long hike. It rained a little, the sky was overcast, and the trees were not at peak color, but we had fun.

I hiked around the Audubon Habitat Wildife Sanctuary in Belmont, MA (Boston suburb) with my friend Tom. I took a few pictures of turtles trains and trees. Around 15 pictures.
I visted my sister on Martha's Vineyard at the end of September and beginning of October. Saw some nice sunsets, hiked at Felix Neck, and visited the MVY musuem. Photo highlights of those and more. Almost 80 pictures.
I went to the Binghamton Luma Festival, which involves projecting images and videos on buildings at night. It had some cool stuff. I took some pictures.
There's a secret swamp just behind the Ithaca Airport. I noticed it while riding my bike and then went back and took some pictures of it. See if you can spot the Swamp Thing!
My friends Catherine, Cabot, and Carina visited me in Ithaca and we went for a hike in Treman Park and saw gorges and waterfalls, despite it being "balls hot" outside. Here are some pictures from that outing.
The 4th of July fireworks were on the 3rd. They're launched from Stewart Park, but I was watching them from ass Park across the inlet after a frisbee game.
I went to Norway for two weeks from April 14-28, 2019, starting in Bergen, then going through the interior with a stop in Flåm, and then onto Oslo. The first week was vacation, then a conference in Oslo, then another day or so before the trip home. I traveled Norway with Stephanie, and once in Oslo, Faith joined in on the fun. I took a lot of pictures. I cut the list down some and broke them up into different sections so each "album" wouldn't have that many pictures, but it now goes from Part 1 to Part 21. Part 1: To Bergen is where it begins.
The History Center in Tompkins County offered a tour of the former Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad station, otherwise known as the Ithaca Train Station. I went there with a few friends. Cool stuff. I had a new wide-angle lens I wanted to try out, and I did.
I went to Watkins Glen with a friend and hiked around a bit and took pictures of the gorge and waterfalls. It was summer and parts of the gorge were shaded while others were brightly illuminated. The leaves on the trees above were bright green, and the sandstone and shale were light and dark browns. Very different from my pictures there from Fall 2004.
I went to England for a 10-day vacation, saw lots stuff in places like Alnwick, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, York, Cambridge, and more. There are a lot of pictures (around 600) spread across 15 sections, starting with The Arrival.
I flew to Martha's Vineyard, off Cape Cod, to visit my sister and spend a few days on The Island. Included are some photo highlights from some hikes, some exploring of Vineyard Haven, and some wandering by the beach and water.
I bought a new tripod for my camera a month ago. I wanted to take some pictures. We have a fall ultimate frisbee league that plays outdoors on Friday nights under lights. Here are some pictures from our game. I don't appear in any of the pictures.
It started with me flying out to San Francisco and then (foolishly) driving to Sacramento for work (no photos). Then going to the DFRWS conference in Seattle. After that, my friend Mowgli and I began our Great Pacific Northwest road trip, for a little over a week across the Pacific Northwest. It started in Seattle, then went up to Vancouver, BC, in Canada, including spending the day at the Butchart Gardens near Victoria, on Vancouver Island, BC. After that, we headed south back to the US, stopping overnight in Olympia, the capital of Washington state, and then into Portland, OR for a few days, including spending a day by the Pacific Coast near Tillamook, OR. I took a LOT of pictures.

I had a quick work trip to Santa Cruz. I flew into San Francisco, then drove down Highway 1, spent a day down there, then back, and home on a red-eye flight. I still had time to take a few pictures. A quick trip, but still some pretty places.
FrankenFest is another name for festivities relating to my birthday. This year was my 50th birthday and I was joined by some friends for a picnic at Stewart Park at the base of Cayuga Lake. A few highlights from this year's event. Note: this is a rare entry in which none of the pictures were taken by me, and instead provided by a couple friends (Bez and Rana). Also, it was ridiculously cold with the wind coming off the lake (below 50F/10C).
At around 1am, Sunday January 31st 2016, while playing with Photoshop, I saw a vehicle with flashing lights drive by, then heard sirens in the distance, and then smelled smoke. Turns out a nearby building in the apartment complex was on fire. There was a rapid response from three different fire departments and they got it controlled within an hour, had it mostly out within two, and four hours later had left. Here are few photos from that.
I went to the Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell to see the installation by Matthew Schrieber called Crossbow that consists of a room filled with lasers! It was neat.
Once again, our local ultimate frisbee group had our in-costume Halloween Hat Tournament. And I brought my camera. At some point I really should reorganize the topics on this page. But that point is not here or now.
The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) were supposed to be visible even down in Ithaca. So I went with a few co-workers to Cornell's Mt. Pleasant Observatory around midnight. The observatory was closed but there were 20-30 people outside, star-gazing. We didn't see any auroras, but it was a clear night and we did see some cool stars.
After Stavanger, I headed to Oslo and spent a few days there, meeting up with a friend who moved to Stockholm a while back. I was in Oslo from May 21-24, 2015.
Faith and I wandered around downtown Oslo one day. It was cool, overcast, and occasionally rainy, but a good day to explore the city. I was in Oslo from May 21-24, 2015.
Faith and I took a boat tour of Oslo and the "fjords." Oslo doesn't really have proper fjords, but it was a nice, scenic tour of the area and a very nice day. A mini-update. The area is called Oslofjord and it is not considered a fjord in the geological sense, but rather it simply means "waterway" or in this case "bay". No false advertising here, merely false cognates (or "false friends" as a cunning linguist I knew referred to them).
As they say, all good things must come to an end. And thus, on May 21, 2015, I headed back home, taking a train to the Oslo airport from the central station, then flew to London-Heathrow, then Newark, then Ithaca.
Frogner Park (Frognerparken) is on the west side of Oslo and contains a large park with a museum, sculpture garden, baths, foundtain, large manor house, as well as trees and grassy areas, perfect for a picnic. Someone I met at the conference, Kai, invited me (and Faith) to a picnic at the park and gave us an amazing tour of the place and told us the story of the statues.
A few pictures of winter in February with some snow and ice and icicles, including frozen and snow-covered Cascadilla Falls. Ithaca in Winter is pretty though a bit cold (about 10°F).
It was fall, past the peak leaf season, but the leaves still had some nice colors. So I went by Cascadilla Falls and the gorge trail and took some pictures.

And after many, many, many years, Tom and Sara actually successfully visited me in Ithaca in August of 2014. Here are some pictures I took from their visit, and some pictures Sara took.
We took the Blue Ridge Parkway, which winds through the Blue Ridge Mouhtains, on the way home, picking it up near Asheville, and then joining I-81 near Roanoke, VA. It was very scenic and beautiful, but of course, it also involved some adventures.
I took a jaunt down to Asheville, NC with a friend. We attended a concert at The Grey Eagle featuring Steve Rothery of Marillion, playing his new Vo-96 Acoustic Synthesizer guitar, along with Billy Cardine, and Paul Vo, inventor of that guitar.
Jack Henion hosted his annual taildragger fly-in at his place on the west side of the lake. There were a lot of people there and more than 15 planes flew in.
After some east coast traveling, I spent a few days in Rochester. I saw the Rochester Fringe Festival, a sort of street fair, on Friday September 20, 2013.
For the second part of my September trip, I visited Walden Pond in Massachusetts with my friends Tom and Sara. Tuesday Sept 14. It was a neat place. Here are some photo highlights.
I spent a few days on Martha's Vineyard, Thursday Sept 12 - Monday September 16. My parents and sister were there. Although I didn't do that much exploring (I've been there many times before), I took some pictures of the area.
While technically, I've been to Philadelphia many, many times, in my book airports don't count as being part of an actual location. So I finally got a chance to be a tourist with my friend Stephanie, and see some of the historical sites in downtown Philadelphia, August 13-15, 2013.
I took some pictures from the backyard of the house of some friends and next to Cornell's Mt. Pleasant Observatory the next day during the Perseid Meteor Shower. For the most part, it's pictures of stars, rather than actual meteors (practically none), though I did see them when not taking pictures.
Some miscellaneous pictures from Oshkosh, including the house where we stayed, some of the airport grounds including the entrace, control tower, and a natural area called Compass Hill.
There are a lot of airplanes at Oshkosh. Here are a few samples of some planes, plus a few shots showing a small fraction of the general aviation planes parked on the grass.
I went to the 2013 EAA Airventure, also known as Oshkosh. I flew with Mike Carman, in his Mooney, on July 28, 2013. The last time I went to Oshkosh, I flew into the Appleton airport, this time we flew into the Oshkosh airport itself. It all went surprisingly smoothly and is quite well run. This page contains pictures from the flight to KOSH. I flew one leg, from the Robenhood airport in Michigan (KRQB) to West Bend airport in Wisconsin (KETB), but since I was busy flying, I have no pictures from that segment.
A few months ago I saw a documentary at Cornell Cinema on Andy Goldsworthy. He's a Scottish artist that works with natural materials, often making ephemeral art. He has a couple works at Cornell. The movie showed him making (or directing some stonemasons to make) a winding stone wall at a place near the Hudson River. It's about 3 hours from Ithaca by car. I decided I'd like to see that place. Also, I figured a couple friends who like to take pictures, Antonia and Rob, would enjoy such a day trip. And finally, it occurred to me that it'd work out well as an aerial excursion. I talked to my two friends and they were up for it. So on June 15, 2013, we set out on a adventure.
Pictures from the multi-block party in Ithaca called Streets Alive which involves blocking off Cayuga Street for several blocks and having people wander about. It was a beautiful day for it, and people were walking and biking in the street, playing volleyball, juggling, and playing instruments at a park. Also, a friend of mine, Sue, had a cook out later that day. Photo highlights from both.
The annual Rubber Ducky Race was held where a few thousand rubber ducks are dropped over the Cascadilla Falls and float, er, I mean race, downstream to the finish line. It's a fundraiser (for 4-H maybe?) and was a nice Sunday afternoon for it.
It snowed here (a little) on a Friday and there was some snow left on Saturday to play snow ultimate on before it melted on Sunday. A few 'action shots.'
I took a trip to visit my parents in Florida in January. We went to Humphris Park, which is by Casey Pass and has a nice jetty, and also went to the Venice Area Audubon Rookery and saw various birds
Once again, I did my end-of-the-year midwest trip, visiting a variety of friends, along with my friend Stephanie. The second set of pictures is of the Bookloft (a cool bookstore in Columbus).
Once again, I did my end-of-the-year midwest trip, visiting a variety of friends, along with my friend Stephanie. The third set of pictures is at Prairie Oaks Metropark (hiking around with Steve, Sue, and Buffy the Wonderdog),
Once again, I did my end-of-the-year midwest trip, visiting a variety of friends, along with my friend Stephanie. The fourth set of pictures is New Year's Eve (and the usual Dison party with fun and games).
Once again, I did my end-of-the-year midwest trip, visiting a variety of friends, along with my friend Stephanie. The first set of pictures are Miscellaneous (Pam and Bill, Glow-in-the-Dark putt-putt, hanging out at the Columubs airport).
This past weekend was our annual ultimate frisbee Halloween Hat Tournament. People play in costume. This year, I went as Arthur, sidekick to the Tick. I have some photo highlights of costumes and some on-field plays of the Halloween Hat Tournament.
I went to the Apple Festival in Ithaca. Wandered around, saw all things relating to apples and the frying of things (including apples), also arts and crafts. It was quite crowded.
I visited my friend Stephanie in Albany. We had fun, including wandering around town, and takinga tour of the Capitol building. Photo highlights of our wanderings.
I visited my friend Jim in Cleveland. We had fun, including bowling and putt-putting with his 2 kids. Photo highlights of our adventures. I'm guessing we were at Mentor Mini Golf.
I went to the Digital Forensic Research Workshop conference (I help organize it) which was in Washington, DC this year. One night, I walked to the National Mall and took some pictures of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and such.
The day after taking fireworks pictures at Myers Park, July 2, 2012, I took pictures of the fireworks display from the City of Ithaca at Stewart Park. More boom-booms and again, more pictures.
The History of Human Imagination exhibit on tour from the Walker Library was in the Kroch Library at Cornell. It had a Sputnik, and Enigma, Canterbury Tales, an Eye of Sauron and more.
I went with some friends to see fireworks at Myers Point in Lansing, just a bit up the road from Ithaca on July 1, 2012. That was the first time I've taken pictures of fireworks. Got some decent shots.
We had a "hat tournament" for our ultimate frisbee group, though the low turnout only provided enough for 2 teams. I brought my camera and took some pictures, and Sue took some while I was playing. Here are a few highlights.
About 7 miles north of where I live are the Salmon Creek Falls (I labeled it as Ludlowville Falls in the album), yet ANOTHER waterfall in the area. In all the time I've lived in this area, I had never been there, although I had seen them from the air a bunch of times. I went there Sunday May 13, 2012, saw the falls, a rainbow, some fish, and more. And I took pictures. So another test of the image gallery. This is about as fast as I've ever been able to put up pictures, captions, and the like.
I went camping in Shenandoah National Park in Virginia from Friday May 4 - Sunday May 6, 2012 with my friend Deepak. Once again, we faced weather challenges, like rain and fog, but we also got some good hiking in and took pictures of meadows and waterfalls. And, I also wrote a new "image gallery" program to make it easier for me to get images online.
The Great Ireland Voyage, 2011. I went to Ireland, from October 24 - November 2, 2011. I attended a conference in Dublin, and then had some vacation days in Dublin and elsewhere, including Galway. I took a good number of pictures.
This part covers Trinity College in Dublin and a rather pleasant, sunny Tuesday. Tehcnically speaking, this is all part of the Sunny Tuesday in Dublin and occurred after I got back from UCD. But there are enough pictures here that I decided to pull it out into its own section. The rest of the day is in the next part.

I went to Alaska my friend Stephanie in June 2011. We had adventures in Fairbanks, Anchorage, and variety of other places. I took quite a few pictures. Around 580 photos total, spread across 15 parts (parts range from 20 - 70 pictures each).
Part 15: Some pictures of Stephane's family and then the flight home.

Part 14: I rented a Cessna 172 (Skyhawk) and a flight instructor from Warbelows at the Fairbanks airport and flew around the area for an hour. Since I was not familiar with the area or local procedures, I was happy to have an instructor with us. The first day I had reserved for flying was pretty crappy, rainy, IFR (cloudy), so we rescheduled for a few days later after the Great 1000 Miles in Three Days trip. The weather that day was decent, though there were some clouds around and rain in the vicinity. No chance of seeing Mt. McKinley to the south that day.
We flew along the Tanana River to the east to Harding Lake and back, since Fairbanks Approach would be able to track us on radar and provide flight following for the entire trip. They lose coverage pretty quickly to the west, there was rain to the south, and not that much to see to the north, given that the flight would be around an hour total.
I've got over 900 hours flying and various ratings, so I'm pretty comfortable flying a Skyhawk. My goal was to see some cool things and take some pictures. Stephanie was in the back seat and took pictures too. I've included her pictures here as well. Technically speaking, her borrowed camera was newer than my borrowed camera, yet it appears that her pictures are smaller than mine. I have no idea, and haven't bothered making all the thumbnails the same size. Just click on them and they'll fill the screen.

Part 13: Stephanie wanted to do some hiking, since he had a lot of miles to log in the car that day. I looked up Glenallen and Delta Junction and realized there would be no good, easilly accessible hiking there. I figured there must be something near, if not in, Anchorage, and we could get in a good hike before we hit the road. There were a few choices, but the best one seemed to be Flattop Mountain. Not only was it supposed to be a good hike with a very pretty view, it was very close to the B&B where we were staying. So we decided to do that hike.
Flattop Mountain is on the eastern side of Anchorage in the Chugach State Park (which sounds like a Klingon name). The trail to the top is 1.5 miles with an elevation gain of 1280 feet, including some rock scrambling at the top. It offers a very nice view of the surrounding area and tends to be fairly popular and crowded.

Part 10: First stop on the Great Southern Loop trip was Denali National Park. It's only a couple hours south of Fairbanks. It's beautiful, it's huge, it takes a full day bus ride to get all the way to the interior (almost 100 miles each way) and we had about 2-3 to spend. Mt. McKinley is rarely visible, since it's often cloudy and the 20 thousand foot tall mountain is surrounded by 5 and 10 thousand foot tall mountains.

Part 11: Exit Glacier is part of the Kenai Fjords National Park. It's a brief drive from the north end of Seward to the visitor center. Unfortunately, hikes to the toe (end) or edge (side) of the glacier take a chunk of time and we had already spend the afternoon in Seward and wanted to get back to Anchorage before too late (and all the restaurants close). So we only stopped at the visitor center (and chatted with the rangers) and an overlook and didn't get to the glacier itself, but we were relatively close. Also, it was quite buggy (mosquitos) and we weren't wearing our netting or bug spray.

Part 12: We stopped in Anchorage on the way down to Seward and then on the way back up. A couple days before, when I was trying to sort out the logistical details, I decided it'd be more fun to stay at B&Bs than hotels, so I went through a list of them. Since Anchorage is a pretty big city, there are quite a few choices. One place had a spot for the first night but not the second, so I wound up booking two different places. That actually turned out to be good, as it gave us a taste of two verry different experiences.

Part 7: The lot of us went to Chena Hot Springs, which is about an hour drive from Fairbanks. Walked around a bit, went in the water (there are hot tubs, pool, and the outdoor spring, which gets to 160°F (70°C), which is damn hot), and had lunch there. It's a nice place. They have various activities, including tours by horse, plane, and ATV (not all at once), an ice musuem, a green house, and more. They also are a big draw for Japanese tourists looking for something to do in the winter. And in the winter, the aurora borealis is supposed to be quite impressive (as you boil and freeze simultaneously).

Part 8: Eagle Summit is a 3,652 feet tall gap through the White Mountains. You can cheat and see the sun at midnight on the solstice in the gap between the mountains even though it's below the artic circle. We didn't do that—it was light enough at "night" in Fairbanks even if the sun was (just barely) below the horizon. Instead, we hiked up in that area. It's a tundra area, which seems more tundra-y than the foresty area by the Pipeline. It's somewhat barren. It was windy and cool when we were there, which mean there were no mosquitos, which was nice. My adventure hat blew off a couple times, but (fortunately) was not lost (Stephanie retrieved it once).

Part 6: Just west of Fairbanks, AK is Ester Dome, providing a nice view of the Tanana River valley and Fairbanks. After setting up some bug traps near the pipeline, we zipped over to Ester Dome to hike around. It was late in the "day" (6pm or so) but that means nothing in the summer with the long days. Also, we already had the mosquito netting and bug spray deployed, which wound up being quite useful, as the bugs didn't bug us.

Part 4: The Alaska Pipeline passes by Fairbanks. Much of it is below ground, but there's a bit above ground just north of Fairbanks. In this part, we stopped by there and took some pictures.

Part 5: The goal was to collect some bugs, seeing if a certain moss that grew on year-old moose nuggets (i.e., moose shit) attracted a certain type of fly. The trap was a modified, inverted 2-liter bottle over the sites. The sites included the things we were interested in, as well as some other locations to server as controls. We set them up, then checked them each day for a few days. The area we selected was the tundra forest area just beyond the pipeline (the Mile 450 location, just north of Fairbanks).
I became a junior assistant scientist (no decoder ring), helping out setting up some insect collection traps in the tundra. Some pictures of our Science In Action!

Part 3: I participated in the 2011 Midnight Sun Run, which is to say I didn't run, I walked. (Why run, what's the big hurry?) It's a 10K race, which is a bit over 6 miles, starting at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and ending at Pioneer Park (a.k.a. Alaskaland). There is a costume competition, so many people come in costume (to win the competition, they must finish the race in costume). I took some pictures of the event and the costumes.

Then to Marina Green and sailboats in the marina. and the Marina Bay bach. From there the Palace of Fine Arts, and the very long, steep Lyon Street Stairs, passing by some views and gardens and residences, finally ending with a very disappointing view of a street intersection. And a few pictures of a cable car being turned around 180 degrees at the end of the line manually by a big dude

While on my Colorado trip, I went to Rocky Mountain National Park(RMNP), August 18, 2008. Locations include Many Curves Park, Rainbow Curve, Lava Cliffs, and the Alpine Ridge Trail.
Stacey ("Stacey Farb") is a friend from undergrad. Well, that's not exactly accurate. She was a friend of my friends from undergrad. I met her after I graduated. But anyway, she's in the same University of Michigan friends group. She got married on August 17, 2008 to a guy named Mitch. They got married in Winter Park, Colorado, a ski resort.
I arrived August 16, 2008. That night we went to went to a pre-wedding rodeo.
Something photo-worthy happened on August 15-16, 2008. Locations include Boulder, Colorado, a little bit west of Boulder towards Nederlands, and a little bit south starting to head towards Golden
Since we ended our West Virginia camping a day early, my friend Deepak and I went to a local park in Maryland, neary the BWI airport, called the Patapsco Valley State Park and spent and hour or two wandering around and taking pictures. This was Sunday Jul 20, 2008. Here are a few pictures from it.
Deepak loaned me a Nikon D40 camera to test drive, including wide angle and telephoto zoom lenses
My friend Deepak and I went backpacking and camping in the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia Jul 18-19, 2008. We went on the Senaca Falls/High Meadow hike. It's supposed to be a three day (easy) hike, but we got bored and finished it in 2 days. The scenery was quite pretty. Here are some photo highlights.
Deepak loaned me a Nikon D40 camera to test drive for this outing. So I got to play with some zoom lenses and things like depth of field.
Moof and Jen stopped by to visit me in Ithaca. We went to a few locations to hike around and take some Fall Photos. Our travels included Ithaca Falls, Treman Park, and Stewart Park. It had rained the previous day, so there was nice waterfall action and some decent fall colors
I went to Ricketts Glen State Park in northeast Pennsylvania, September 29-30, 2007. It's a pretty park with lots of waterfalls. My friend Deepak joined me there and we camped, shot some pictures, hiked, and such

I went to the Osh Kosh Fly-In in Osk Kosh, Wisconsin, July 25-29, 2007. It's the aviation mecca. On the order of 700,000 people attend the event during the week and 10,000 - 12,000 planes fly in to the Osh Kosh Airport.
I flew out with two other members of the flying club. Rather than deal with the busy airspace at the Osh Kosh airport itself (KOSH), we opted to fly into the Appleton, Wisconsin airport, Outagamie County Airport (KATW). Others from the flying club flew out to Fond Du Lac.
Below is a description of the trip out and back and some of the things I saw at the show.

The Great Arizona Trip begins. I was out in Arizona from November 4th - 13th, 2006. I flew into Phoenix, was only there overnight, then went up to Flagstaff for a few days, first stopping through the small, but cute town of Jerome, AZ.
While in Flagstaff, I saw various things, including the Powell Observatory (where they discovered "the stellar object formerly known as the planet Pluto"). Other highlights including hiking around Walnut Canyon National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, and Sunset Crater, all very close to Flagstaff
Living in Ithaca, NY, there are a lot of beautiful things to see. Fall in the Finger Lakes region is always a beautiful time of year. On Sunday, October 8, 2006, I hiked around the upper trail of Buttermilk Falls State Park, with Brendan, Kristen, and Kathryn. It was a beautiful, warm October day, in the 70s (or 20s if you're metric). It's a very pretty park, with gorges, waterfalls, and other Ithaca type stuff.
Living in Ithaca, NY, there are a lot of beautiful things to see. Fall in the Finger Lakes region is always a beautiful time of year. On Saturday, October 7, 2006, I took a few pictures at the Allen H. Treman State Marine Park, before playing ultimate frisbee (at Cass Park). And then on Sunday, October 8, 2006, I went flying with Amelia, a fellow pilot, and served as the safety pilot for her as she did some practice IFR approaches. Since my job was to be the look-out, I did just that. And while I looked out, I took some pictures

I was in The Bay Area for a week, from February 11th-18th, 2006. I was attending the RSA Conference, which was in San Jose, CA, and spent most of the week there. I also went into San Francisco for a day.
Here are some photos of my day as a tourist in San Francisco (Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks, and Haight Ashbury) and a few random shots of San Jose as I tried to finish the roll of film (yes, film!).
I was in New Oreleans on June 26, 2005, and had a dinner food fest with my friend Golden and some others. It didn't suck. I was back August 6, 2006 and we made a rocking lunch.
In June 2005, a bunch of us that attended the University of Michigan for undergrad got together at Keith and Kendy's place in Columbus, OH (technically, it was Pickerington, just west of Columbus). This is similar to the group that attended Karen's Wedding but this time no photoshop tricks. Here's a picture of the group, and here's a map in case you want to know who's who.
I went BACK to England in May 2005. While it was a business trip, I did managed to do a good bit of sightseeing in London and Oxford, including doing some flying. Plus a visit with friends in Ann Arbor, MI on the way back, and a couple pictures at the end of the roll in Ithaca.
Fall in Upstate New York is a very pretty time of year. This summer was gloomy and rainy, but for some reason, Fall was particularly colorful. I took a trip to Watkins Glen, on October 20, 2004, joined by my friends Moof and Jen from Rochester. We hiked around the gorge. Then the next day, I wandered around The Plantation at Cornell and the woods beyond Fall Creek and finished the roll of film.
In August of 2004, I visited Tom, his wife Sara, and their 3 year old son Zachary. Here are a few pictures. One of me, Zachary, and Tom on the subway in Boston (they have a subway in Boston?). Another of me and Zachary in a park along the (Charles?) River by Harvard (the caption was too good for me to delete). One of me and Sara at the Hanscom Airport in front of the plane I flew in on. Note that Sara is wearing a “Flying Karamazov Brothers” t-shirt. We all saw the show (and I have a similar shirt, just like the one I had 25 years earlier(!!)). The Flying Karamazov Brothers are a group of jugglers. Very talented and funny (though they are neither Russian nor brothers). Tom and I used to juggle “back in the day” at OSU. Here are twoshots of us seeing if we could remember the old ways. Note the koosh-balls in mid-air in these “action shots.”
At the 2004 Digital Forensic Research Workshop (DFRWS04) in Baltimore, MD, in August I participated in the "forensic rodeo." Here's a picture of our team (going from right to left, Golden Richard, me, Pete Ware, and his son Bill (you know, like father, like son)). Golden, Pete, and I attended grad school together at Ohio State.
I suppose I should mention that we came in second (out of two) to the other team, that had Eoghan Casey, Brian Carrier, and Kulesh Shanmugasundaram on it. While they're all cool guys, last year (2003) we lost to them because of a hocky question. A hockey question! This year, the evidence disks were improperly imaged when they were given to the teams, so most of the questions could not be answered and they were declared the winner because well...because. We pretty much discovered the same information, but they presented a bit more. And I think we clearly had the advantage of having a cute kid on our team. I suppose there's always next year.
I didn't take this one, but it's a cute shot. I was visiting Jim and Michelle Kaplan in Cleveland in June 2004, and was holding their son George who was a little over a year old. He was pretty big (>30 lbs). Oddly, there's nothing particularly twisted about this picture. Karen (Mirisola) Wiarda can be seen doing the dishes in the background. The date is approximate.
I've attended a number of New Year's Eve parties at Catherine and Cabot's place. Anna, a former student of Cath's, often has some festivities at her place. Here's a picture of the group at Anna's place in January 2004 plus a who's who. And a shot from December of 2005 of me and Carina “on the steps, talking about life,” at Cath and Cabot's house.
It was a snowy, foggy day in Ithaca, NY (my home), Dec 2002. I grabbed my camera and the digital camera from work and spent a few hours wandering around in a haze, by Fall Creek, The Plantations (now Cornell Botanical Gardens), the Cayuga Nature Trail, and then at the top of Mt. Pleasant (which wasn't all that pleasant, but looked pretty cool).
Neel Jain came to Cornell to recruit for the Evil Empire. His departure from Ithaca heralded my arrival. His wife took two shots from his hotel room in The Statler (photo1 and photo2). The pictures are somewhat big (600K). Update: ”somewhat big“ was somewhat big back in 2001. The date is not exact. This was early photoshop work for me.
I took a trip to Peru in August of 2002. We flew into Lima, had a 4 hour layover, from 1am till 5am, then flew to Cuzco. Spent a few days there acclimating to the altitude, and then joined a group on a four day hike on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
After that, we took one of the coldest damn bus rides I've ever had to Puno and spent two days on Lake Titicaca, including the floating islands of Uros as well as Taquile and Amantani (where we spent the night with a family).
Then, we took a bus through the middle of nowhere and desert to Arequipa and spent a couple days there, including the Santa Catalina Monastery, followed by Nazca and the Lines therein (sadly, none of the Lines were visible in any of the desert pictures, so none are included here).
I went to Pisco, Paracas, and the islas Ballestas (home of Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and boobies (we're talking birds here, sorry)).
Then onto to Lima, to see museums, folk music and dance, bazaars, as well as various areas around the city, like the huge Chinatown and Barranco.
Here's a shot of a group of us in Ann Arbor for Karen Mirisola's wedding in June, 2002. Actually, it was Northville, MI, the reception was in Ann Arbor. The majority of people in the picture attended the University of Michigan together, “back in the day.” Actually, there were four pictures taken, all of which had some problem with them. But through the magic of photoshop, I could extract one good one. From left to right, back to front, the players are: Michelle and Jim Kaplan, Frank (me); Kevin and Gwen Berg-Hartnett (Kevin's holding Matthew), Kendy and Keith Markman, Stacey Farb, Mary Arnold, Holly ???, and Susan Potoroka. Photo taken by Paul Arnold. Sadly (perhaps?) I was obscurred in all shots, so not even Photoshop could salvage that. Just a moment...just a moment...perhaps I spoke too soon. (Actually, to me the addition isn't as frightening as the fact that it's so easy to eliminate someone from a photo. My apologies to Matthew.) Note: The exact date and location are unknown.
I was in Detroit in March, 2002, and had dinner with my former college roommate Matt the Dufus. His wife took a picture of us professing our love of the world (in a punk rock sort of way). Note: I've no idea of the exact date or the location.
A couple pictures from Sarasota, Florida in Jan 2002. One is a sunset from Nokomis beach and the other is while canoing on the myakka River in Oscar Sherer State Park.
I went to a showing of Casa Blanca put on by the history department, Fall 2001. Period attire was encouraged. My friend, Leigh Anne, who was the classes TA, her advisor, the professor of the course, his wife, and I were the only ones to dress up. Still, it was fun. I'd just like to point out that in the picture, my cigarette is merely rolled up paper. I didn't want them to get money for such a prop. And it's hard to put a costume together with almost no preparation (this was due to laziness, not short notice). Update: This is just a single photo. The Noyes Lodge is now known as the Martin Y. Tang Welcome Center. Also, I only know it was in Fall of 2001, so the dates are just guesses.
Photos from Saguaro National Park a little outside of Tucson, AZ and a couple from Sedona, in early April 2001, when I was out in Phoenix to give a tutorial at a conference.
Around December of 2000, I loaned Tania my car. She had never heard of a gas door release latch before. She has the strength of 20. Hilarity and structural damage ensued. Note: the date is an approximation.
Just a few pictures Lisa took when she, Faith, and I were in London, England in October 2000. (Note: The last photo was. I belive, taken on the corner of Neil Street at the intersection of Short's Gardens (east corner, facing northwest).
I was on a "business" trip to Hawaii in October 1998. I took some time off afterwards and went to the island of Kauai. I took a bunch of pictures, unfortunately, I've only got one scanned in at the moment.
An old picture, but a fun one. A friend and co-worker from OSU, Tom Fine, circa 1993, did his best impression of himself in the future (yes, I'm a cruel bastard, but only because he's a friend...). Speaking of that, I have to dig up a picture of his Halloween costume... This was taken in my office in Bolz Hall at Ohio State (before we moved to the new building, Dreese II). Note: I'm guessing the year (it's close), but made up the month and date
Yes, 1986! I found some old pictures from undergrad days in a box on a weekend road trip to Chicago with Jim to visit my brother and see some sights. I'm only including 8 pictures from that era.
Moof sent me this picture that was taken when we were at band camp in 1983. He got it through that strange "book of faces" thing I keep hearing about, from someone that went to high school with us, a year behind us (Hi, Rhoda!). I'm wearing our yellow class t-shirt (listed all the names of our graduates) and have a lot more hair. Moof is in shorts and is thin. Though as he had said, I do look rather "schlumpy." Yes, my fashion sense is about the same as it was over 40 years ago. Note: the actual date is a guess and I don't know the location other than it being within an hour or two bus ride from Beachwood
