Stockholm at Night
After the day's adventures, I ventured out on Sunday night, March 29, 2026.
I took a walk around Serels Torg (the plaza with the lighted obelisk)
and the Culture center and theater (Kulturhuset Stadsteatern) where
the protest had been the previous day while we were having Fika,
and down Drottninggatan, the pedestrian area where the stores were.
It was cold enough (probably around 2-4°C or 36-38°F) that I
didn't spend that much time wandering around outside.

A Tour of the Stockholm City Hall
They say you can't fight city hall.
I tried it
and it turns out it just ignored me. But you can get a guided tour of
it—especially Stockholm City Hall (Stockholms stadshus), and
I did on March 30, 2026.
The tour covered the Blue Hall, which is where the Nobel Prize
Banquet occurs. It can accommodate over 1700 people! The Hall is not
blue but originally was going to have blue tiles on the bricks to give
it a water theme, but then the designer changed his mind.
Next was the Red Room, where the City Council meets.
The Oval Room is a small chamber beyond the Red Room. Weddings are
held here on Saturdays. The ceremonies are short and they go through
a lot. It costs about $100 to get married here. Receptions and such
must be elsewhere, this is just for the ceremony itself. The waiting
list is about 3 months or more to schedule a slot (and the ceremonies
are civil and very brief with no room for guests).
There is a small circular chamber with some ornamental rugs on the
wall that connects the Oval Room to The Gallery of the Prince
The Gallery of the Prince is named after Prince Eugen and is a long
narrow room with windows on one side and a long wall on the other.
Next to the windows are figures that were carved in stone. On the long
wall is a mural (a fresco) that the prince had painted showing views
of some of the islands of Stockholm.
The Golden Hall (Gyllene Salen) is a large room with gold-leaf
tiles that create images of famous Swedes, from royalty to engineers
to actresses. It is where the ball (dancing) is held after the Nobel
Prize Banquet. The Banquet used to be in this room but was moved in
the late '60s to the Blue Hall to accommodate more guests (as getting
Nobel Prizes became a cool thing).

The City Hall Inner Courtyard, City
Hall Park, and Lake Mälaren
After the tour, exited City Hall and walked around the inner courtyard
and took some pictures of aspects of the building. Then I left the
courtyard and entered the the City Hall Park (Stadshusparken). The
park has statues and sculptures, grass and a promenade that is right
next to Lake Mälaren. I wanted to get a photo of me with the Lake
and Stockholm in the background, so I watched to see if there was
anyone from the tour group who had a DSLR camera, rather than a cell
phone. I spotted one and asked if he'd take a picture of me with my
camera, and then I was able to return the favor taking a picture of
him and his wife/girlfriend/friend/whatever. The park is small, but
it's a sort of sheltered area behind City Hall. It was a cool-ish,
gray day, but still scenic.

![A quote from a children's book “The true story of the towers that struck the world with amazement” The passage is: The tower sighed so that the flaking gold crowns rattled in his crown. And through the tears he saw his reflection in the knight's bay: an old abandoned tower, a sad but idyllic image in the mirror-like water... A Skarsgård boat passed by and the Town Hall Tower became a red flicker in the bowsprit. [rough online translation] 065-DSC_1086-th.jpg](/images/Photos/Sweden2026/5-Stockholm-2/065-DSC_1086-th.jpg)

Outside City Hall, Heading Back to the Hotel
After the tour of City Hall and exploring the courtyard in the back,
I decided I needed to take “the obvious photo” (to me),
which required finding a place to set my camera for a timer shot. It
was also slightly out of sight from most which was good. After that,
I walked back, crossing the Stadshusbro that goes over Lake Klara
(Klara sjö). From there, I took some pictures of the skyline including
the steeple of the St. Klara's Church that was near my hotel where the
Schibsted Enterprise Technology building
is (it's a media company), and the Stockholm convention center.
Both have interesting looking buildings.
