[When was the last time you saw one of these receipts (if ever)?]

December 18, 2025

I was going through some old bags that had flight training stuff in them and found this receipt from 1996, a few months before I got my private pilots license, but after I soloed. I flew for 0.8 hours and the cost was $28.80, or $36/hr.

Using an inflation calculator, that would be equal to $59.62 or $74.52/hr which represents a cumulative rate of inflation of 107%. The current rate for those planes (one of them is still there, but N68148 was sold several years ago) cost $125/hr. That represents a 247.2% increase in the price. Ooof!

I think we had a credit card processing machine (hence the authorization code), but it didn't print a receipt, so we had to write those out by hand. It's been a long time since we had to write out receipts by hand. And I blurred out my signature and the card number, even though I'm pretty sure I don't have the same card and even if I did the number has long since changed. But still... For those curious about "old school" receipts, here's the full-size image.

I tend to doodle. Over the years, I've accumulated lots of random sketches of things, sometimes people, sometimes things, and sometimes just abstract lines. The basic idea on these pages is for me to slowly scan in highlights from my collection of random quick doodles. I also am providing a place where I can explain what it is or what motivated it or perhaps some reason why I'm not to blame. With the sketches of people, their name may be hand-written, or there might be a talk title provided, but I will tend to avoid providing full names. I don't mind if people know who they are, I just don't want them coming up on search engine hits, since that might be a bit rude.

Note that the images are PNGs with transparency. Mozilla and Firefox properly render them. Safari too, I think. Internet Exporer doesn't. I don't care.
If you want to see the image without the annoying blue-lined background image, just click on the image.
