The Arlanda Airport Escalator (of DOOOOM!)
  [It's a long way down...or rather, up.]

April 01, 2026

The Arlanda Airport is the primary airport for Stockholm, Sweden and the Arlanda Express is a (pricey) express train that goes from the airport to the city centre (following the "when in Rome" spelling rule) and back and takes 18 minute zipping along at over 110 mph (in the 175-185 kph range). The airport train station is underground, which isn't an unusual thing.

What is unusual to me is just how far underground it is, and the only thing I have to measure it is the vertiginous escalators and that the light fixtures are mounted in the ceiling at what looks like a 45° angle. I didn't count but one video shows an escalator ride takes almost two minutes to go up or down. They have signs posted advising people to hold the handrail…tightly. They're a sort of pink-ish color on the sides but are too small to read. Also, note how the pictures appear to be rotated with respect to the direction of travel. They're level when you're standing.

You can't really see the bottom from the top or the top from the bottom when standing because the floor and ceiling, respectively, cut off seeing the end. And surprisingly, Google (which I tried as a last resort) reported that it could not find any details on the length, rather than just make one up.

This picture was taking when I arrived at the bottom, looking up. I didn't think to take one from the top, either when I arrived (didn't remember from 25 years ago how long it was) or when I was leaving (I was probably thinking about the low probability of my itinerary working). Here's the full size picture. Also, just to be clear, this is no April Fool's joke.

I tend to doodle. Over the years, I've accumulated lots of random sketches of things, sometimes people, sometimes things, and sometimes just abstract lines. The basic idea on these pages is for me to slowly scan in highlights from my collection of random quick doodles. I also am providing a place where I can explain what it is or what motivated it or perhaps some reason why I'm not to blame. With the sketches of people, their name may be hand-written, or there might be a talk title provided, but I will tend to avoid providing full names. I don't mind if people know who they are, I just don't want them coming up on search engine hits, since that might be a bit rude.

Note that the images are PNGs with transparency. Mozilla and Firefox properly render them. Safari too, I think. Internet Exporer doesn't. I don't care.
If you want to see the image without the annoying blue-lined background image, just click on the image.
